Luna Lovegood is one of the weirdest characters in all of Harry Potter. She dreamily wanders the halls of Hogwarts only half paying attention to everything going on around her, thinking about (and seeing, apparently) some creatures that most people don’t even think exist.

There’s a lot of mysteries surrounding Luna and her strange left field views, so we’ve looked into some of the most interesting facts about her, her family and her background.

10 Her Mother Died During An Experiment

We met Xenophilius Lovegood a couple of times across the Harry Potter franchise. In fact, it was around his neck that we first caught a glimpse of the Deathly Hallows symbol. However, we were never able to meet her mother, who Luna described as an ‘extraordinary witch’.

It is revealed that her mother died during a particularly explosive experiment with spells, and as such, Luna can see thestrals.

9 She Was Taught Divination By Firenze

We do meet Firenze in the Harry Potter films, but it is only a fleeting visit that happens in the Forbidden Forest. One of the most interesting storylines that the films miss out is his employment at Hogwarts as a divination teacher who clashes intensely with Professor Trelawney.

Luna explains at one point that she doesn’t understand why everyone hates divination because she has a great teacher: Firenze.

8 She Was Temporarily Quidditch Commentator

The first few films showed us that Fred and George’s best friend, Lee Jordan, was Quidditch commentator. He was enthusiastic and interesting if occasionally a little biased.

Somehow, Luna eventually landed the job herself and provided commentary that was as dreamy and mismatched as you’d expect it to be. Her commentary style wasn’t exactly well-loved and she didn’t last very long in the role.

7 She Discovered Various New Species

Even if Luna’s obsession with strange magical creatures that no one had ever heard of was mostly seen as a source of comedy throughout the series, it turns out she can’t have been far away from a bit of a breakthrough, even if no one trusted her judgment.

She didn’t find a Crumple-Headed Snorkack, but she still proved the existence of a variety of unknown species.

6 She Married Newt Scamander’s Grandson

While it’s unlikely that the areas of the Wizarding World that we all know and love will ever be explored again, we’ve got three more Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them films on the horizon.

The films follow Newt Scamander, whose love for magical creatures trumps even Luna’s. Rather fittingly (though we still wish she’d ended up with Neville) she ended up marrying his grandson, Rolf.

5 And They Had Twins

The two ended up having two children, a set of twins named as strangely as you’d expect.

We don’t know a lot about Lorcan and Lysander, but as Luna and Ginny remained good friends, they likely saw a lot of Harry.

4 Her Patronus Is A Hare

Patronuses are a strange part of Harry Potter lore. They began life as powerful, hard-to-achieve spells that repelled dementors, but by the end of the franchise, everyone could pull it off and create their own wandering animal who could do a lot more than repel dementors.

Luna’s took on the form of a hare.

3 Her First Name Is A Reference To Her ‘Madness’

Despite being nicknamed ‘Loony’ as a reference to her ethereal, hard-to-decipher personality, Luna’s first name already had connotations that linked her to the crazier end of the spectrum.

Luna is a link to the idea of lunacy, which is built on the ancient suggestion that the moon caused insanity.

2 And Her Surname Is A Reference To Her Kindness

In a very contrasting way to her first name, Luna’s surname is a connection to the exact opposite side of her personality. While she might be a little far-out, Luna is one of the most deep-down kind and caring characters in the entire franchise, and seems to only have good intentions.

Her surname, ‘Lovegood’, seems to be a reference to the fact that she seems to love everyone and treats everything with kindness.

1 Evanna Lynch’s Backstory Is Interesting

While there is a persistent rumor that Evanna Lynch landed the role of Luna through an affiliation with JK Rowling, that isn’t quite true. However, she does have a very cool story that led to her casting.

She was in the hospital at the time of the release of The Order Of The Phoenix, and was allowed to leave to pick up a signed copy as she loved the franchise so much. She then went to an open audition for the role and managed to beat 15,000 hopefuls, while being described as perfect for the role by both Rowling and director David Heyman.
