Game Of Thrones 10 People Lysa Arryn Should Have Been With (Other Than Jon)

Although Catelyn Stark is the main character of Game of Thrones through which we get to experience House Tully, the importance of her younger sister Lysa cannot be understated. Yes, her sister may be deranged and repulsive, but she is literally one of the main sparks that ignites the fires of war in the series.

Lysa and her marriage to Jon Arryn is something that solidified the rebellion against the Targaryens, and years later she would murder her husband, which began the war between the Starks and the Lannisters. But what would the world have been like had Lysa married another? Here are 10 characters in Game of Thrones and A Song of Ice and Fire that Lysa should have been with, besides Jon Arryn.

10 Arthur Dayne

Marriages in Westeros are typically used as a tool to shore up alliances, and while the big names in the Seven Kingdoms are always big ticket items when it comes to betrothals, there are some seriously heavy-hitting but low-key houses that would make some great matches for someone like Lysa Tully.

And one of those low-key powerhouses is House Dayne. Arthur Dayne was one of the most badass warriors in Westeros, and he became one of the most legendary members of the Kingsguard, but had he not joined up with that order it would have been good for him to match with Lysa.

9 Baelor Hightower

Another super powerful house that historically flies under the radar is House Hightower. While House Tyrell are the Wardens of the Reach, House Hightower is the oldest and arguably most powerful house in the region.

They may have descended from the First Men, or may have even arrived in Westeros before the First Men, and they are extremely savvy when it comes to developing allegiances and ending up on the winning end of any war or conflict. Adding a Tully to their ranks would be a good move for both houses.

8 Paxter Redwyne

For those who are unaware, the legendary Queen of Thorns, Olenna Tyrell, was originally a Redwyne. House Redwyne are the leaders of the Arbor, an island in the Reach that is extremely wealthy and is home to one of the greatest navies in the country.

The Redwyne fleet is larger than the Iron Fleet, and even the Royal Fleet. Creating a connection with any powerful force like that is a good move, but it seems like an especially beneficial decision for the Riverlands, a region that relies on it’s coasts and waters so much.

7 Jason Mallister

It’s an unfortunate reality that second daughters are less valued than firstborn daughters, and it’s even more unfortunate that Lysa is a particularly unappealing potential match for obvious reasons.

However, if Hoster Tully wanted to strengthen his connections with a powerful house in the Riverlands, then marrying Lysa to Jason Mallister would have been a good move. House Mallister is an even prouder house than House Tully, and their wealth and prime location at Seagard makes them a key component of the Riverlands.

6 Rickard Karstark

With Ned marrying Catelyn, it wasn’t entirely necessary to bolster the Tully connection to the North even further by marrying Lysa to Rickard Karstark, but in the long run it may have been the better play.

The Karstarks commanded an army that was a literal make or break component of Northern power, and Lysa’s match in the Vale really did nothing to help House Tully or House Arryn. Perhaps her marriage would have been better served as a secondary bolster to Cat’s.

5 Victarion Greyjoy

Allegedly Balon’s younger brother Victarion is a complete moron, but to be honest that may have been better for someone like Lysa anyway. Bringing the Iron Islands into the fold would have been a good move, but it also would have had the added future benefit of Lysa having very little influence over the inner workings of the mainland kingdoms.

No one knew it at the time, but giving Lysa power in the Vale nearly destroyed all of Westeros, so being stuck with an ironborn dullard may have been to everyone’s benefit.

4 Kevan Lannister

The Lannisters eventually joined in with the rebels to overthrow the Targaryens, but their allegiance to the new regime was always much shakier than the rest of the Robert’s Rebellion squad.

The one and only Lannister connection was through Cersei, who was positioned right next to the Iron Throne, and putting another ally to Jon, Ned, and Robert with the Lannisters would have been massively beneficial. And Kevan Lannister may not be Tywin, but he’s still far too smart to fall victim to Lysa’s low cunning.

3 Stevron Frey

If Hoster Tully truly wanted to bring the powerful but reviled House of Frey into his fold, then giving them a marriage with Catelyn would have been a smart move. And if he just wanted to throw them a bone, then Lysa was a perfectly acceptable match as well.

It’s awful to say, but Lysa’s grimy behind would have fit right in with House Frey, so marrying her off to Walder Frey’s eldest son wouldn’t just be a decent political move, it could have been a genuinely good match as well.

2 Jaime Lannister

This is a tidbit of A Song of Ice and Fire history that was omitted from Game of Thrones, but for a hot minute Tywin Lannister and Hoster Tully were actually trying to arrange a match between Lysa and Jaime.

Although Lysa was a second daughter and had some unappealing qualities, she had actually gotten pregnant before, and her fertility made her a much hotter commodity (that’s actually why Jon Arryn married her specifically). Jaime and Lysa seem like a match made in hell, but if they made a few heirs to Casterly Rock then perhaps Jaime and Cersei’s deviant behaviors would have remained a secret and war would have been averted.

1 Petyr Baelish

So yeah, you know how Lysa’s pregnancy was omitted from Game of Thrones? The alleged father of that baby who was never born is none other than Littlefinger.

Clearly Petyr Baelish never cared of Lysa, however if Hoster Tully had just allowed Lysa to marry Petyr and have their baby then the literal course of Westeros history would have been completely changed, and likely changed for the better. At least no one else in the world would have to be stuck married to these two nightmares.
