After a brilliant start filled with daring storylines and jaw-dropping plot twists, Game of Thrones slowly went downhill, ending with a final season that was a disappointment to many viewers. Some things that fans hated about season 8 were the destruction of King’s Landing, Cersei and Jaime’s lackluster deaths, and Daenerys’ abrupt descent into becoming the “Mad Queen.”
While there were moments in the season that were memorable, such as Arya killing the Night King and Jaime knighting Brienne, fans on Reddit believe other storylines could have been better with a few tweaks. Several fans shared suggestions on how the final season could have improved its flaws and given a more satisfying conclusion to the epic tale.
10 Jaime’s Return To Cersei
When Jaime defied Cersei and went to the North to join the fight against the Army of the Dead, fans applauded the noble move. But once the Battle of Winterfell was won, he went back to her. This was one of the things fans hated about season 8 as it undid Jaime’s evolution, putting him right back where he’d always been.
In a detailed post about little things they’d change to fix season 8’s problems, Reddit user Roscoe_King suggested fixing Jaime’s disappointing arc by killing off Brienne during the battle so Jaime “feels lonely and has no more role to play. So he decides that maybe he can convince Cersei to surrender.” This way the end result is the same but comes about in a more acceptable way. However, the original storyline showed how much he loved Cersei, despite her flaws, and was one of Jaime’s best episodes on Game of Thrones.
9 The Night King’s Defeat
One of the best moments of season 8 was in episode 3 when the Night King was about to kill Bran, and Arya killed him. Although everyone expected an epic battle between the Night King and Jon Snow, the surprising plot twist had a pretty cool maneuver from Arya that made the kill satisfying.
However, it also left fans wondering how Arya made it past the rest of the army without one of them stopping her. Redditor netflixaholic suggested that “Arya still kills the NK in the exact way in the show except it only works because the NK is distracted while he and his minions fight Jon, Theon, and Gendry.” Other fans added Jaime to the list so all the notable houses (Lannister, Stark, Targaryen, Baratheon, and Greyjoy) would work together to defeat the Night King, bringing back the epic symbolism the show was known and loved for in earlier seasons.
8 The Trigger For Daenerys’ Attack
Daenerys started spiraling after Cersei beheaded Missandei. Once the Mother of Dragons struck back, there was no reasoning with her even when Cersei surrendered. Dany’s decision to burn down King’s Landing was called out by many fans as odd because it seemed to come out of nowhere.
Redditor FreakyCheeseMan had an idea to fix that and suggested that instead of Cersei killing Missandei, she sets her free and sets the masses on her by labeling her a friend of the invader. The same crowd that cheered for Ned’s beheading and attacked Cersei on the streets would likely attack and kill her on that basis alone, and as the fan said, “Now when Dany attacks, she has actually [sic] hatred to the common people,” thus giving her a less out-of-the-blue reason for burning them to death.
7 Bran As King
Each main character on Game of Thrones had an ending that tied up their arc on the show, leaving some things open-ended. Daenerys was dead, Arya went West of Westeros, Sansa became the Queen of the North, and Jon Snow was banished to live Beyond the Wall.
Of all the character’s endings, Bran’s was one that most fans on Reddit had a problem with. One Redditor suggested that instead of Bran becoming king, “they should have agreed to create a federation of independent kingdoms with one of the leaders at a time presiding.” This would have given each of the Seven Kingdoms a fair shot at ruling for a while and eliminated the potential uproar from leaving the choice to the lords and ladies.
6 The White Walkers’ Presence
During the Battle of Winterfell, the wights played a prominent role as they attacked the North’s defenders. The Night King also had some key moments during the battle. His commanders, however — the White Walkers — were barely seen throughout the episode. Even though some fans on Reddit didn’t like the White Walkers, others had hoped to see more of them in the final season.
In a comment about the Battle of Winterfell, one Redditor said the episode “would have been improved by having some of those Valyrian steel swords put to use.” The episode was a missed opportunity to have the Valyrian steel weapons working against formidable foes — especially considering the epic fight between Jon Snow and a White Walker during the battle in Hardhome, which led to the discovery of the Valyrian steel’s power against them in the first place.
5 The Duration Of The Battle Of Winterfell
After building up the Northern threat from the pilot, its biggest moment was in episode 3 of season 8, “The Long Night.” The threat was vanquished in that episode-long battle, thanks to Arya. The Redditor Ham_PhD suggested stretching the battle across two episodes and said “this way the battle against the dead would’ve at least been a bit longer considering the build-up.”
While the battle had great moments, the conclusion to seasons of build-up in one episode was a little underwhelming. On the other hand, stretching it out might have made the battle redundant and filled with filler content that didn’t really add much to the story, especially since only a few key characters died during the battle.
4 Cersei’s Death
After Melisandre’s cryptic prophecy to Arya about her shutting brown, blue, and green eyes forever, most fans anticipated Cersei’s death to be one of Arya’s brutal kills. She was, after all, on Arya’s kill list. Unfortunately, Cersei’s death was rather underwhelming as she was buried alive by rubble during Daenerys’ fiery rampage.
Redditor PlusSideOfThings commented a suggestion that “when Arya and the Hound leave for KL, they end up bumping into Jaime. She takes his face and kills Cersei.” Jaime killing his sister was a popular fan theory, based on prophecies from the books, and this change would have given her death a bigger impact and made it more memorable.
3 Daenerys’ Death
After Daenerys destroyed King’s Landing, mercilessly killing most of its citizens, she became the last villain standing on the show. Once Jon realized that she was beyond redemption or reason, he killed her.
Most fans hated both how her transition to “Mad Queen” was depicted and her death that followed. Reddit user croweskii commented that “the Dany thing was so rushed I’d almost rather she got killed off by the NK or during the war with Cersei before she went mad.” That would eliminate the “Mad Queen” storyline that was hastily developed and let Daenerys die an honorable and tragic death.
2 The Length Of The Season
Season 8 had six episodes, which attempted to tie up various fan-favorite Game of Thrones storylines, as well as some not-so-popular plots. Most of these were rushed and didn’t finish up the story in a way that satisfied the fans.
