Game Of Thrones 5 Ways Daenerys Was A Worthy Queen (& 5 She Wasnt)

Daenerys Targaryen was motivated by one primary desire throughout Game of Thrones: the Iron Throne . The young queen’s family is ousted from power during Robert’s Rebellion, and Daenerys is forced to flee to Essos. There, she grows into her power as the last queen of House Targaryen, gathering a powerful army of dragons, Dothraki, and Unsullied while abolishing slavery in Meereen.

Early in her reign, Daenerys appears to be a promising monarch. The Khaleesi accomplishes incredible feats and is sought out by many. As the series progresses, however, Daenerys makes crucial mistakes that lead fans to wonder: was she a worthy queen after all?

10 Worthy: Revived An Extinct Species

Game Of Thrones 5 Ways Daenerys Was A Worthy Queen (& 5 She Wasnt)

In the season 1 finale, Daenerys shocks the world by hatching her petrified dragon eggs in Khal Drogo’s funeral pyre. Dragons went extinct over a century before the beginning of the series. Many of Dany’s ancestors attempted to replicate her epic feat, only to die in the fiery process.

The birth of the dragons is almost miraculous. Daenerys survives the fire with the newly hatched Drogon, Rhaegal, and Viserion, exemplifying the predestined path to the power laid out before her.

9 Unworthy: Robert Baratheon Destroyed The Targaryens’ Claim To The Throne

The Targaryen queen spent the majority of the series on a quest to restore her family’s dynasty. Neither Daenerys nor Viserys was willing to relinquish their family’s throne, despite House Targaryen’s loss to Robert Baratheon during the war.

King Robert destroyed the Targaryens’ claim to the throne when he overthrew the Mad King. Rightfully, the Westerosi laws of succession decreed that Stannis was the rightful heir to the Iron Throne, not Daenerys or any other Targaryen.

8 Worthy: Freed Slaves In Essos

Game Of Thrones 5 Ways Daenerys Was A Worthy Queen (& 5 She Wasnt)

Daenerys spent the early years of her reign smashing the slave trade in Essos. In season 3, the Khaleesi takes Astapor with fire and blood before setting her sights on Yunkai. Season 4 sees the young queen complete the Slaver’s Bay trifecta by conquering Meereen and freeing the city’s slaves.

In the end, Daenerys abolishes slavery in all three cities and leaves the Bay of Dragons better than she found it. Unlike other monarchs, Dany cared about others and wanted to do right by her people.

7 Unworthy: Jon Snow Was House Targaryen’s True Heir

Game Of Thrones 5 Ways Daenerys Was A Worthy Queen (& 5 She Wasnt)

Daenerys loses her brother, Viserys, and unborn son, Rhaego, during season 1, making her the apparent heir of House Targaryen. In her family’s name, Dany works to revive the power of the dragonlords and install herself on the Iron Throne.

Season 7 features the shocking revelation that Jon Snow, real name Aegon Targaryen, is the true Targaryen heir. As the legitimate son of Rhaegar and Lyanna, Jon’s parentage places him ahead of Daenerys in the line of succession and, in the eyes of many, the rightful King of Westeros.

6 Worthy: Stayed In Meereen To Become A Better Queen

Game Of Thrones 5 Ways Daenerys Was A Worthy Queen (& 5 She Wasnt)

During her journey in Slaver’s Bay, Daenerys learns that conquering a city and ruling a kingdom are varying, difficult tasks. The Khaleesi opts to remain in Meereen in season 4 instead of sailing to Westeros, as she recognizes that she needs to be “more” than the Mother of Dragons.

Daenerys strives to be worthy of her crown as she develops the skills necessary for a queen. By denying her desire to go home in favor of helping her people, Dany shows that she was capable of being the monarch the world deserved.

5 Unworthy: Didn’t Know Westeros Well Enough To Be Its Queen

Game Of Thrones 5 Ways Daenerys Was A Worthy Queen (& 5 She Wasnt)

Despite her ambition, the Mother of Dragons knew little about the land she wanted to rule. Daenerys is of Westerosi descent and was born on Dragonstone, but she fled the country quickly after her birth. Most of her life was spent in Essos, across the Narrow Sea.

Daenerys was more accustomed to the Free Cities, as well as the Dothraki Sea and Slaver’s Bay. The Seven Kingdoms needed a ruler who understood the country and the people who lived there.

4 Worthy: Protected The Realm From The Night King

Game Of Thrones 5 Ways Daenerys Was A Worthy Queen (& 5 She Wasnt)

The living and the dead finally meet in battle during season 8’s “The Long Night.” The Targaryen queen’s army of Dothraki and Unsullied guard the gates to Winterfell, while Daenerys takes to the skies on Drogon to protect her people.

The Khaleesi proves herself worthy of leading the people of Westeros by delaying her war with Cersei to defend the realm. Unlike the Lannister queen, Daenerys recognized where the true war needed to be fought.

3 Unworthy: Refused To Surrender

Game Of Thrones 5 Ways Daenerys Was A Worthy Queen (& 5 She Wasnt)

Throughout Game of Thrones, the Iron Throne became the fixated goal for Daenerys. The young queen believed her claim to be true above all others. Dany refused to surrender her sovereignty and stubbornly clung to her desire to become Queen of Westeros.

Daenerys could have surrendered to Cersei in an attempt to save Missandei’s life and spare more bloodshed. Alternatively, the Targaryen queen could have left the Iron Throne for Westeros’ favorite Jon Snow in order to return east and build an empire of her own.

2 Worthy: Tried To Win The War Without Killing Innocents

Game Of Thrones 5 Ways Daenerys Was A Worthy Queen (& 5 She Wasnt)

Season 7 begins with Daenerys’ long-awaited return to Westeros. The Targaryen queen arrives at Dragonstone, her birthplace and ancestral seat. It isn’t long before Dany and Tyrion start talking strategy, with both expressing a desire to win the war with the least amount of death possible.

The Khaleesi agrees to her Hand’s plan to siege King’s Landing and attack Casterly Rock. Tyrion’s plans ultimately fail, causing Daenerys to up her game against Cersei.

1 Unworthy: Burned King’s Landing

The path to the Iron Throne becomes clear in season 8’s “The Bells,” though Daenerys shocks the Seven Kingdoms by succumbing to her family’s madness in a moment of rage. The city surrenders when Dany attacks the city, but the grieving queen unleashes her fiery fury on the people of King’s Landing.

This destruction all but undoes Daenerys’ heroic efforts in Essos and against the Night King. In a single episode, the Breaker of Chains becomes the Burner of Cities. Daenerys initially seemed like a worthy queen until her wrath consumed the Capitol of Westeros, costing her the Iron Throne.
