Game Of Thrones: Every Great House, Ranked By How Many Members Survived The Events Of The Show

From season one to the finale of Game of Thrones, the Great Houses suffer immense losses, with some even ceasing to exist. Here’s how they rank.

The fantastical world of Game of Thrones is vast and expansive, with the show and A Song of Ice And Fire series far from exploring the whole world in which it is set, with both set predominantly in Westeros. The seven kingdoms that make up the continent are divided and resided in by various houses, a handful of which being extremely powerful and influential in the land and the events of the story.

Those who fall into that category are known as the ‘Great Houses’ and are the most prominent players in the game. However, from season one to the finale, these Great Houses suffer immense losses, with some even ceasing to exist.

10 The Extinct Houses (0)

Death is such a crucial part of Game Of Thrones and is ingrained in the very fabric of one of the best things about the show; the subversion of expectation. However, the implications of individual deaths add up, leading to whole houses ceasing to exist.

That is what happened throughout the events of the show as well as before it. Some are legally extinct/no longer Great Houses, three of which due to the War of the Five Kings, four from the War of Conquest. Those houses are; House Baratheon of Dragonstone, House Baratheon of King’s Landing, House Bolton, House Casterly, House Durrandon, House FreyHouse Gardener, House Hoare, House Justman, House Mudd, House Targaryen, House Tyrell.

9 *House Targaryen (1)

While houses like House Frey are simply no longer great houses but probably still have members in and around Westeros, and others have literally no bloodline left, House Targaryen is legally extinct, but still has a bloodline.

That bloodline is, of course, Jon Snow, a.k.a Aegon Targaryen. However, since Jon took the black and dropped all his familial ties, he is not a Targaryen, and as such, the house is legally extinct.

8 House Arryn (1)

House Arryn of the Vale of Arryn is a Great House whose only two representatives throughout the show are the worst, most annoying characters, Robin Arryn and Lysa Arryn.

Fans do not get to properly meet Jon Arryn, who is killed by Lysa and Littlefinger, and later, Lysa also gets killed by Littlefinger, leaving the sole Arryn at the end of the show as Robin.

7 House Greyjoy (1)

House Greyjoy of the Iron Islands is another house that suffers a good amount of death throughout the show and is also one which lacks in the ‘decent people’ department at many points in the series.

Balon Greyjoy, by far the worst king in the War of the Five Kings, is killed by Euron, who, in turn, gets killed by Jaime Lannister in the series’ penultimate episode. Theon dies in the Battle of Winterfell after a long, tumultuous story, leaving Yara Greyjoy as the last standing Greyjoy. Aeron Greyjoy is seen in the show, but Euron tells Yara they are the only Greyjoy left, implying Aeron died.

6 House Baratheon (1)

The Baratheons of Dragonstone and the Baratheons of King’s Landing are extinct, but they are also branches of the House Baratheon, which still lives on.

This is due to Gendry Baratheon, who, for seven seasons, was simply the bastard of Robert Baratheon and so not recognized as legally part of the house. When Daenerys legitimizes him, she reinstates the house into the list of Great Houses in Westeros.

5 House Lannister (1)

Unquestionably the most powerful family for the most consistent lengths of time throughout the show, and one of the most crucial to the story is House Lannister, the house with perhaps the best characters in the show.

However, with so much death in Tywin, Kevan, Cersei, Jaime, and their legally Baratheon children, the house is left with one member, the most mistreated member whom a lot of the family hated and wanted out of the family, Tyrion Lannister. There is also Kevan’s wife Dorna Lannister, née Swift, but we never meet her, nor do we know where she is or if she is alive.

4 House Martell (1?)

There are a couple of houses whose exact number in terms of the bloodline is not precisely known, and like there is no concrete confirmation that Aeron Grejoy is alive or dead, there is no genuine knowledge on the number of Martells.

The only Martell fans know truly still exists is the unnamed Prince of Dorne introduced in the series finale, but who he is we do not know. There are other daughters of the deceased Oberyn, but they are bastards, so with Oberyn, Doran, and Trystane’s deaths, as well as Elia’s years prior, the house is definitely depleted.

3 Bronn’s House (2)

The only Great House without an official name is that of everyone’s favorite cutthroat, Bronn of the Blackwater, also known as the Master of Coin, Lord of Highgarden, and Lord Paramount of the Reach.

Bronn’s house of Highgarden, which rules over the Reach, is by a long way the newest Great House and is another whose exact number is technically unknown, with Bronn the only definite. Bronn does have a brother, but there is no knowledge of him. Assuming his brother is alive, the house and bloodline sit at two.

2 House Tully (2)

A Great House that will likely live on for a good long time thanks to its current members is that of House Tully, rulers of the Riverlands and with the joint-worst patriarch alongside Robin Arryn, Edmure Tully.

The former heads of the family, Hoster and Brynden (a.k.a the Blackfish,) both died, and so too did Edmure’s sisters Lysa Arryn and Catelyn Stark, both pretty brutally. Luckily for the legacy of the house, Edmure managed to have a child with his Red Wedding wife, Roslin.

1 House Stark (4)

The de facto heroes of the Game Of Thrones story is House Stark, a family who suffered so very much, both in terms of death and in terms of what the surviving members went through, more than any other house.

But, they persevered, they survived, the wolf, or in this case, four killed the sheep and made it out of the end of the War of the Five Kings, the war against the army of the dead, and Daenerys’ short-lived mad queen phase. While Ned, Catelyn, Rickon, Robb, and Benjen, as well as Lyanna, Rickard, and Brandon Stark, all died, Sansa, Arya, Bran, and Jon Snow, son of Lyanna, all survived. Even going by Westerosi law and excluding Jon, three Starks remain, more than any other Great House.
