Game of Thrones Ranking Every Hero Death In The Show

The saga of Game of Thrones stretched out across eight seasons (the last two of which were astoundingly lackluster.) Still, the creators managed to weave an epic of such proportions that it managed to hold its place atop HBO’s hierarchy for most of its run. This success was due both to its elaborate fantasy and its sophisticated storyline — not to mention the array of characters taking up space in the show.

Most of them were neither heroes nor villains, but those who sought to redesign their world according to their best interests/intentions. Nevertheless, a few of these characters were, in fact, morally unambiguous at various points in their lives, and, therefore, made a great impact when they were killed in the course of events.

10 Khal Drogo

Drogo turns out to be a surprisingly warm husband for Daenerys, even “taking care” of Viserys for her, which explains her unmitigated rage at his death.

Unlike most Dothraki, who find solace in dying on the battlefield, he is first infected accidentally through Mago’s arakh (later forced into a coma by Mirri Maz Duur as revenge for what his Khalasar did to her village.) This is the moment that shapes Dany’s destiny, as she asphyxiates Drogo to death — later emerging from his funeral pyre with the three dragon hatchlings.

9 Robb Stark

Even though Robb is killed off quite early in the story, it sparks a conflict across Westeros, as many Houses despise the callous manner in which the Freys and Lannisters teamed up to perform the Red Wedding (they had always hated the Boltons, so nothing new there.)

Both Robb and his pregnant spouse are murdered in cold blood, with the finishing blow provided by Roose Bolton as he utters the most iconic/horrifying phrase in the show, “The Lannisters send their regards.”

8 Daenerys Targaryen

The final death in Game of Thrones has to be the Queen of Westeros, after reconquering her alleged birthright back by unwarranted force. Jon is the man for the job; he remains the last person on the continent who hadn’t “betrayed” her, and therefore is allowed into her presence with minimum supervision.

Her end marks a new era for the Seven Kingdoms, and six of them are finally united under a unique banner: that of Bran the Broken, a man chosen by his aristocratic peers to lead them out of this mess.

7 Jon Snow

Jon is not someone from whom one should be taking moral guidance, but at least he has some amount of honor left in him. He tries to hold the Night’s Watch together, as best as he’s able, but several of his “brothers” consider him a traitor for allying with people they did not approve of.

They conspire to stab him to death, Caesar-style, and subsequently leave him to slowly die. But he doesn’t die; to the contrary, he is brought back to life by Melisandre and the Lord of Light, which cements his status as the true leader of the fight against King’s Landing.

6 Hodor

Hodor is probably the nicest character in the entire series, which makes his death (and related backstory) all that much harder to bear. Bran over-wargs, leading the White Walkers to his location and putting everyone, including Meera, in danger.

Luckily, Hodor is there to save the day, keeping the exit of the cave firmly shut under strict orders to “Hold the door,” which somehow travels back in time and influences his past self into suffering a miserable death in exchange for saving Bran.

5 Theon Greyjoy

Although Theon has not always fought on the right side, he dies for the safety of every person in Westeros — Bran even expresses his gratitude for him when the Night King arrives, showing that he knows exactly what is going to happen.

Theon accepts his destiny with dignity, and rushes towards his opponent wielding an obsidian weapon, which, of course, does not work. He gets himself killed for his efforts, but his sacrifice took the exact duration required for Arya to reach the grove and complete the job.

4 Oberyn Martell

Oberyn’s death is borne of arrogance, regardless of the fact that his cause is entirely justified. In seeking vengeance for the brutal rape and murder of his sister, Elia, by the Mountain, he overshoots his goal and loses focus far too early.

As misfortune would have it, Gregor Clegane comes back out of his rut, and once Oberyn is within his inescapable grasp, the Dorne Prince receives the most gruesome finishing move there is. There isn’t much to learn from this turn of events, but it makes a rather valid point: celebrate victory after you verify your enemy is actually dead.

3 Lyanna Mormont

There are few characters in the show who can command an audience like Lyanna Mormont, and her robustness is evident all the way through to the conclusion. The Night King’s forces have entered Winterfell, and a Wight Giant wreaks havoc in the courtyard, where Lyanna is rudely tossed to the side.

Although she bravely runs at him, he manages to grab her in his massive fists and squeezes her to death. She, a thirteen-year-old child, still gets the last word in (or rather, the last dagger through the Giant’s eye.)

2 Ned Stark

Ned Stark’s is the first death of a major character, who is basically killed off because he prefers to live life in the service of justice rather than kowtow to the royal temporaries of the world.

In fact, he endures the shame of being labeled a traitor to his people, and is executed under the orders of the new King Joffrey (just so his children are saved from the Lannisters’ wrath, not that they are.) In any case, it is this death that sets the precedent for the rest of the series, especially the massive war that rages across all eight seasons of the show.

1 Lady Olenna Tyrell

Even the smartest people cannot survive forever, but Olenna Tyrell sure did try to keep her manipulations going for as long as possible. When there was no escape, she calmly asks Jamie how he plans to kill her, to which he kindly provides her a painless alternative to his sister’s grandiose BDSM fantasies: a small vial of poison.

She consumes the substance, fondly reminiscing about doing the same thing to his son, Joffrey, and even exhorting him to expose the whole story to Cersei. Until the very end, Lady Olenna remained the sass queen of Westeros.
