HBO’s Game of Thrones saw Margaery Tyrell develop a fondness for Sansa Stark, but were they ever real friends?

When Margaery Tyrell and Sansa Stark meet in Game of Thrones, it seems as though a beautiful friendship might blossom. They’re two of the less dark characters in the whole series, which is really saying something since most characters seem to be capable of evil to some degree. They’re both queens in nature, both having a tendency to be a little selfish but ultimately good-hearted.
Alas, their time together is short and viewers never see a true friendship happen. But could they ever really be friends anyway?
10 Margaery Steals Sansa’s Place
Although Sansa’s relationship to Joffrey is utterly abusive and she is treated atrociously, she is — in some awful way — living the dream she always wanted: to be married to a king. Of course, by this point all she wants is to go back to Winterfell and be more careful about what she wishes for, but she’s stuck — until Margaery comes along.
Although Margaery saves her from Joffrey and provides him with another wife, she still embarrasses Sansa and takes her place. Margaery doesn’t know how bad Joffrey is at this time — her motivation is all selfish.
9 Margaery Is All About The Game Of Thrones
Margaery isn’t interested in having friends that don’t benefit her. Although she seems kind and charitable, going out of her way to provide for the poor, she’s really doing it all for show and to make royalty more likable so she’ll have a better reign as queen. Margaery, if viewers look closely, doesn’t actually want to befriend anyone who won’t provide her with a great advantage. Even when Joffrey dies, she slides seamlessly to Tommen, almost unaffected by the death. Joffrey is horrible so it’s hard to blame her, but it’s clear Margaery is attached to nothing but the game.
8 Sansa Quickly Learns To Trust No One
It’s not just Margaery who doesn’t seem to want friends. Although Sansa wishes to be popular when she’s young and care-free at Winterfell, she quickly learns there are far more important things when she ends up in King’s Landing. She shuts down and closes herself off to the idea of trusting anyone — certainly not the power-hungry Margaery. Hard to blame her!
7 Margaery Doesn’t Stand Up For Her With Joffrey
Margaery can claim good intentions but although she’s good at manipulating Joffrey, she doesn’t stand up to him. She watches him bully and humiliate people and although she tries to redirect him into other activities like one might try to train a dog, she will ultimately not stand up to him — not for Sansa, not for anyone. It’s not worth putting herself in his firing line.
6 Margaery Keeps Too Many Secrets
Margaery has too many secrets. She’s never a focal point of the series so we never find out what they really are, but it becomes obvious that she’s keeping her cards close to her chest — as much as she’s trying to portray the idea of being care-free and open. It doesn’t bode well for a genuine friendship.
5 She’s Also Under Olenna’s Thumb
Even if she was to become more open with people, Olenna would never allow it, or allow Margaery to have genuine friendships.
In a way, it’s understandable. Olenna knows how the game works and she’s protecting her granddaughter from a horrible fate if she doesn’t know how to manipulate the awful people around her. But Olenna is constantly reminding her to stand strong on her own and keep her secrets. She wouldn’t advocate Margaery opening up to anyone — not even Sansa.
4 Sansa’s Only Real Friends Are In The North
Sansa becomes so homesick and so disgusted by those around her that it becomes quickly apparent her only real friends will be in the North. This idea is further shown at the end of the series when she becomes queen there, and the North splits off as an independent country. It doesn’t matter how nice the Tyrells are to her — her loyalty is to do the Starks.
3 Margaery Would Do Anything For The Iron Throne, Even If It Hurt Sansa
Ultimately, Margaery’s hunger for power means that she would absolutely screw Sansa over if she had to. There’d be no choosing her friend over the Iron Throne, or over the Lannisters if they were the ones giving her power. It doesn’t matter what’s morally right.
2 Margaery Is (Fake) Friends With Cersei
Sansa could never fully trust Margaery because she’s ‘friends’ with Cersei.
Of course, she’s not really friends with her — it’s all a lie, and doesn’t Cersei know it! But Sansa isn’t aware of this, and she wouldn’t want to confide in someone who might go back to Cersei with her secrets. Sansa may admire Cersei a tad for how she conducts herself as a queen, but she despises her as a person. Understandably.
1 The Two Are Almost Too Similar
It’s almost as if the two of them are too similar to really be friends. Sansa and Margaery are both too closed off — Sansa because she’s learned to be defensive and has been hurt so badly, Margaery because she’s climbing towards her goal of queen. In another life where the Iron Throne wasn’t such an open contest, perhaps they could have been better friends.
