Amazon Prime Video has released the first teaser trailer for its upcoming I Know What You Did Last Summer series. Based on the 1997 slasher film of the same name, itself inspired by the 1973 novel by Lois Duncan, the show will follow a similar premise of a group of teenagers hunted a killer one year after they cover up a fatal car accident. Despite not resonating with critics, the original film — which starred Sarah Michelle Gellar, Jennifer Love Hewitt, and Freddie Prinze Jr. — proved highly popular upon its release, going on to spawn two sequels. Alongside fellow Kevin Williamson-penned film Scream, the movie is credited with renewing interest in the slasher genre in the late 90s and early 2000s, although unlike Scream, the series has not seen the same resurgence in popularity as of yet.

Originally announced in 2019, the first episode was initially set to be directed by James Wan, with Shay Hatten producing the script. However, when Amazon greenlit the series in 2020, it was revealed that Sara Goodman had replaced Hatten as the writer and Craig William Macneill had been brought in to direct, with Wan and Hatten serving as executive producers. I Know What You Did Last Summer will star Madison Iseman, Brianne Tju, Ezekiel Goodman, Ashley Moore, Sebastian Amoruso, Fiona Rene, Cassie Beck, Brooke Bloom, and Bill Heck.

The teaser for I Know What You Did Last Summer released by Amazon hints at the interpersonal relationships at work in the group of teens as they attend a graduation party, in particular their conflicts and frustrations with one another. The trailer then takes a darker turn through snippets showing the fatal car crash and the fate that will befall the group later down the line. You can check out the full teaser below:

The teaser has a very different feel from the original film, showing a much more vibrant setting than one would expect from a slasher. That said, that may be a good thing as it will make the series stand apart from its predecessor. It will also be interesting to see if this vibe continues into the series proper. Likewise, the trailer seems to hint that there may be more at work in the series than is initially apparent, with even greater levels of suspicion existing between the group members. Moreover, the series promises to explore the dark side of their seemingly perfect town which will certainly create even more drama.

While the teaser does a good job of hinting at what’s to come, it also seems that I Know What You Did Last Summer is keeping a lot of its cards close to its chest. Fortunately, fans won’t have to wait too much longer for a proper look at the upcoming series. The show is set to be one of Amazon’s panels at New York Comic-Con next month, so it’s more than likely that fans will get a full trailer then before the series’ first four episodes arrive on October 15th.
