Gamescom 2021 Backs Out Of In Person Event & Goes All-Digital

Gamescom 2021 will be going all-digital this year, yet again. The event will be held in its annual August window and continue to be a big celebration of games this summer. The event is typically held in Germany and is largely considered to be the European E3. However, given COVID-19 is still a threat, plans are shifting this year.

Gamescom 2021 is just one of several events going digital this year. E3 2021 will also be a digital event but will still cater to gamers via press conferences, interviews, and more. Gamescom is typically a continuation of E3, though often on a smaller scale in terms of big reveals. This year’s event will be held from August 25 to August 27 and still feature many of the traditional festivities, such as the big opening ceremony and Opening Night Live, which features exclusive reveals and looks at upcoming games.

Geoff Keighley will return to host Opening Night Live once again and likely bring a bunch of surprises with him. The Game Awards host has a knack for bringing surprises with him wherever he goes and will also host another digital event with Summer Games Fest. Details are relatively scarce for this summer’s gaming events but Keighley teased what Gamescom 2021 will hold in store. “Gaming fans worldwide can already look forward to this year’s gamescom: Opening Night Live. After last year’s great success, the interest of developers is huge to be able to present their world premieres in the ONL this year and thus become an important part of gamescom 2021.”
