Gareth Edwards Had to Sneak Off Godzilla Set For Rogue One Meeting

Director Gareth Edwards had to sneak away from the Godzilla set to take a meeting about making Rogue One. The British filmmaker rebooted the popular kaiju franchise for Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. in 2014, making what would become the first film of their ongoing MonsterVerse series. He then went on to direct the standalone film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which released in 2016 to both critical acclaim and financial success.

Star Wars fans have been largely critical about the way the film franchise has been handled since Disney bought Lucasfilm, with the sequel trilogy proving extremely divisive, but appreciation for Rogue One emerged as a rare point of common ground. The film was set in the direct lead-up to the events of A New Hope and depicted the team of Rebels who succeeded in stealing the Empire’s plans for the Death Star that eventually come into Princess Leia’s possession. While reviews of it at the time were dimmed a little by the fanfare that met The Force Awakens the year before, fan admiration for it has endured to such an extent that Disney included it among their surprise Disney+ Day theatrical screenings.

According to a retrospective interview with StarWars.com, Edwards needed a little subterfuge to secure the Star Wars gig. Describing himself as a massive fan of the franchise who never believed he’d actually win the job, he was set on taking the meeting with Lucasfilm’s Kiri Hart, which was occurring before the title for J. J. Abrams’ trilogy starter had even been announced. But, Edwards says, he happened to still be working on Godzilla at the time, and though the walk from WB to Disney was not far, he was worried to tell anyone about the meeting because of the chance he’d be invited back for a MonsterVerse sequel. I remember when I first met with [Lucasfilm’s] Kiri Hart at the very beginning of it all, just snuck in for a very secretive meeting. I think they were meeting with loads and loads of filmmakers, like it was [when] The Force Awakens was beginning. I don’t think anyone had announced the title or anything. We knew there was a Star Wars film happening and probably more to come. At the time I was finishing Godzilla, and they were at Disney, and you can walk from Warner Bros. to Disney in about 10 minutes. I was nervous about telling anyone that I was going for a meeting at Lucasfilm, because if things went well I’d be doing the Godzilla sequel, and so I pretended I had to get some food or something. I just went down and met with Kiri Hart down the road.

The studio ended up sending Edwards the script for Rogue One, and while he was torn about revisiting what he thought of as “hallowed ground,” he was excited enough to continue to meet with them and discuss the project. It was already late in the process when he learned that, despite his belief that he would ultimately be beaten out for the job, he was the only director they were meeting with. Edwards was ultimately right about the need for secrecy, as when the Godzilla sequel was greenlit with him attached to direct, he chose to leave the project rather than sacrifice his desired timeline within the Star Wars universe.

Despite its status as a standalone film, the legacy of Rogue One is set to continue with Andor, an upcoming Disney+ series following the film’s character Cassian Andor. With original screenwriter Tony Gilroy serving as creator and Diego Luna reprising the title role, fans are eagerly anticipating that show’s release, which is expected to be sometime in 2022. Before then, it might be worth it to revisit Edwards’ movie, which is also available on the streaming service.
