The music-based platformer Geometry Dash has been popular since the early 2010s, and for the first time in four years, it’s close to receiving a new update from developer RobTop. Many players noted earlier this year they were experiencing the longest wait for a fresh update in the game’s history. Now, the update has been officially announced, and a trailer for the update has been premiered.

Geometry Dash launched for mobile devices in 2013. August 13th was its 8th anniversary. The precise, skillful movement in the game made it a challenging entry in the runner genre, which Subway Surfers and Temple Run had popularized in previous years. Geometry Dash had a more thematic spin on infinite runners. Alight with a neon art style and a catchy electronic soundtrack, it has a positive critical reception on release and engaged a wide audience of challenge runners. The inclusion of user-generated levels helped keep the game popular with content created by the community, and it’s remained a top example of the best rhythm games for beginners, especially on mobile.

Until today, as announced by developer RobTop Games on Twitter and pointed out by Reddit user ElHadouken, Geometry Dash had not had an update planned since 2017. Update 2.1 was released in January of that year and is the current version of the game. The upcoming update is simply known as Update 2.2, and a preview video for it premiered on August 14th at 4:00 PM EST on RobTop Games’ YouTube channel. It shows off new level elements and mechanics that fans can look forward to exploring when the full update launches.

Curiously, the premiere is not the only trailer for 2.2 that RobTop has listed. Many of the upcoming features for the next update have already been teased on the RobTopGames YouTube channel. Development plans for 2.2 have been public since late 2017 when a video was posted about random obstacle triggers that would be coming to the game. RobTop has also teased new camera controls, a “Free Fly Mode,” a platformer mode reminiscent of Super Mario Bros., and a handful of additions to its level editor. All are associated with the update that was just revealed.

While the announcement is exhilarating, much of its social media response has decried the long wait fans have been sitting through since 2.1. Geometry Dash understandably fostered a more active community when its updates were more frequent and consistent. Now that new content is confirmed to be well on its way, the wait will likely end soon, and players will be able to enjoy brand-new experiences in the rhythmic runner.
