Ghidorah Set Up Kongs Next Battle In Godzilla King Of The Monsters

The novelization of Godzilla: King of the Monsters reveals that the consequences of King Ghidorah’s return reached all the way to Skull Island, where a new battle began for King Kong. Kong didn’t take part in the action in King of the Monsters, but apparently he had a challenge of his own to deal with, except it occurred off-screen.

When Jonah (Charles Dance) and Emma (Vera Farmiga) use the Orca to wake up Ghidorah, they unwittingly unleash a disaster that could devastate the worlds beyond their understanding. Their plan was to wake up the Titans gradually, but due to their lack of knowledge about Ghidorah’s alien origins, they failed to take into account that Ghidorah wasn’t part of the natural order. Ghidorah let out a call that woke up the remaining 17 Titans, and chaos ensued. Long-buried Titans emerged after spending thousands of years in hibernation. Ghidorah’s call brought about the return of Behemoth, Scylla, Methuselah, and a third M.U.T.O.

A passage in the novelization of Godzilla: King of the Monsters explains how Ghidorah’s call affected Skull Island. Kong heard Ghidorah’s call but chose not to answer it, yet he wasn’t the only denizen of Skull Island who heard it. The Skullcrawlers who dwell beneath the island heard it as well, causing them to rise to the surface. Kong knows they’re coming, so he angrily braces himself for a showdown with the Skullcrawlers, as described in the excerpt below.

“He heard the call. He had heard calls before. Not the enemies who killed his parents. the deep-dwellers… He felt movement in the stone beneath him, and his anger grew brighter. The deep dwellers heard the call, too. The crawlers with faces like bone that haunted his sleep. They were Waking. The quiet was over. He scratched the itch on his ribs and began to hunt.”

The Skullcrawlers were Kong’s main opponents in Kong: Skull Island. The subterranean creatures, so-called for their skull-like heads and crawling movements, lived in the Hollow Earth. In the movie, the arrival of the Monarch expedition set off a chain of events that pit Kong against a giant Skullcrawler. Now, thanks to King Ghidorah, Kong is forced to face the Skullcrawlers again. It’s possible that Ghidorah’s call could have awakened even more of the beasts than before.

The events of Godzilla: King of the Monsters are impacting Kong in a major way, as indicated by both the novelization and the credits sequence of King of the Monsters too. Hopefully, Kong is able to deal with the Skullcrawlers, because more problems are on their way. The credits revealed that new Titans are being drawn to Skull Island, which means that Kong may have to fend off a few uninvited guests. On top of that, Kong is just months away from a clash with the King of the Monsters in Godzilla vs. Kong.
