Columbia Pictures released a reboot starring an all-female main cast directed by Paul Feig in 2016. The original Ghostbusters was one of the first movies, along with Star Wars, to make a significant profit developing merchandise to accompany the film, a practice that has continued through today.

The Ghostbusters Advent Calendar comes with “13 days of ghostly surprises,” including stickers, a coaster, magnets, a keychain, buttons, and a pin. The item is a Walmart exclusive that is available only in US stores for now. The box set is being sold for $25.

The post-Halloween, pre-holiday consumer window is exactly the kind of retail no man’s land that would produce this ungodly hybrid of Santa and Zuul. With nothing but a paltry few fake gourds to sell in the Thanksgiving interim, Walmart has ingeniously fused the preceding and upcoming holidays’ more enticing themes to produce an item that harnesses the supernatural powers of both.

A traditional advent calendar contains 24 boxes to symbolize the 24 days of December leading up to Christmas; Walmart’s version has only 13, for spooky reasons. Ghostbusters: Afterlife, a sequel directed by Reitman’s son, director Jason Reitman (Juno, Up In The Air), will be released on November 19 exclusively in theaters. It’s likely that the calendar’s 13 days are meant as a promotion leading up to the film’s release, although the numbers might not perfectly add up. The rules of space and time no longer exist in the Ghostbusters calendar, and December is a long way away.
