Lifelong Ghostbusters fans who grew up with the original films are beyond excited to see a full-fledged sequel about to make its theatrical debut, and it’s a great opportunity to reignite the franchise for an entirely new generation, as well. Ghostbusters: Afterlife is being directed by none other than Jason Reitman, the son of the late Ivan Reitman, who helmed the original so long ago.

He’s ready to bring audiences back into the world they’ve been waiting so patiently for, making Afterlife one of the most sought after sequels and reboots in years. This trailer is littered with a ton of awesome easter eggs that directly connect the new film with its previous two entries, and it’s just a taste of what’s yet to come when the film is released.

10 The Ghost Trap

There’s nothing quite like a piece of vintage cinematic merchandise to galvanize the fan base, and the trailer for Ghostbusters: Afterlife plays on this fact with the first big reveal, just 30 seconds in. One of the characters, Phoebe, is shown solving some sort of a puzzle in the floor tiles, which reveals a trap door with a big secret inside.

That secret turns out to be a leftover Ghost Trap from the old Ghostbuster days, complete with black and yellow hazard striping. Obviously, Phoebe doesn’t have a clue what this device is, but for longtime Ghostbusters fans who grew up with the franchise, it’s the first signal of great things to come.

9 The Photo

Old photographs bring back many memories, and they’re a product of a bygone era in the digital age. Nevertheless, the best ones continue to elicit feelings of nostalgia from within the frame, and Ghostbusters is no different. The Afterlife trailer features one great shot of the original Ghostbusters foursome.

This is a great nod to the original series and the first of many that directly reference the old gang. From left to right, Egon, Raymond, Peter, and Winston are shown standing outside Ghostbusters headquarters, which was originally filmed in one of New York City’s most iconic shooting locations. Things seem to have come full circle.

8 Annie Potts

The next wonderful reveal occurs just 40 seconds into the trailer when the kids and their mom are shown walking through an old farmhouse that was supposedly owned by Egon Spengler. Turns out he’s the father of Callie Spengler, and the grandfather to Phoebe and Trevor, the two adolescent heroes from the film.

Annie Potts herself shows up in a reprisal of Janine Melnitz role, telling a brief story of the house, and the man who once owned it. It’s little cameos like this that help to bridge the gap between installments of a franchise that has been dormant for over 30 years. She still looks as charming and lovable as ever.

7 The Ecto-1 Logo Reveal

It wouldn’t be Ghostbusters without that quintessential logo of a cartoon specter wrapped up in a cancel symbol, and it gets its first big reveal during a quick scene when the kids go rooting around in the barn. They pull back a sheet covering what appears to be a large vehicle familiar to fans of the series.

That brief reveal of the logo paves the way for the very next scene, showing Trevor working on Ecto-1, the famous station wagon used as the go-to vehicle for the Ghostbusters team in the first two films. After fixing it up, the kids take it for a joyride through a grass field to test out its muscle.

6 Vintage Ghostbuster Commercial

YouTube tends to be the bastion where ancient TV commercials find eternal recognition, and Ghostbusters is no different. After a scene introducing the ominous threat facing the small town where the film takes place, the focus shifts to Phoebe, who begins diving into the history of the Ghostbusters to learn more.

There, she discovers the very first television commercials aired during the 1980s, featuring Egon, Raymond, and Peter. Every bit as corny as they were back then, the commercials nevertheless cement the connection to the first two films in a big way, by directly referencing past events.

5 The PKE Meter

More Ghostbusters gadgets get featured before the big action sequence reveal, and it’s nice that they didn’t go straight for the iconic, and surprisingly plausible Proton Packs right off the bat. Instead, one scene shows the popular PKE Meter, a device used to measure psychokinetic energy from the paranormal forces around New York City.

The fact that the gadgets in question were not altered or “updated” for a modern audience is icing on the cake. These are purely ’80s designs and deserve to be referenced as such. It also sets up an interesting plot device seen in the trailer, where the kids decide to give these classic gadgets a few upgrades.

4 Stay Pufts Galore

The first film wouldn’t be nearly as memorable, were it not for the hilariously entertaining scene, where the Ghostbusters go up against the dreaded Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. It seems the burly fellow is back in Afterlife, though on a much smaller scale.

Paul Rudd’s character, Mr. Grooberson, stumbles upon these bite-sized apparitions while shopping at what appears to be a Wal-Mart. It’s not yet known if the Stay Pufts are malevolent, or just mischievous, but seeing them pop up again in the new film is a welcome sight.

3 The Return Of Gozer

It seems the demonic entity known as Gozer has not been completely vanquished since the events of Ghostbusters. A few nods to the character can be seen in the new Afterlife trailer, but there’s one shot in particular that firmly establishes its presence.

It occurs right after the Wal-Mart scene in a darkly lit wide shot of a room containing an effigy of Gozer in statue form, flanked by two demons on either side. Whether Gozer is the primary villain, or merely the puppet of a more powerful entity has yet to be fully revealed, but it will be interesting to see how the story plays out.

2 The Terror Dogs Return

It wouldn’t a Gozer return without the dreaded Terror Dogs at its side, and they seem to be making a comeback as well. When Grooberson is shown fleeing the Wal-Mart in the evening, he’s chased out the front doors by a creature that is unmistakably a Terror Dog, complete with horns and glowing red eyes.

The original film was limited by the technology of the time, meaning there wasn’t a lot for the Terror Dogs to do, besides sit there looking menacing. In this film, they’re out in the open, and able to demonstrate their frightening speed. It could end up being one of the coolest parts of the film.

1 Raymond’s Cameo

The final shot of the Afterlife trailer is a cruel one, especially if it turns out to be just an arm and a voice. The scene shifts to Ghostbusters headquarters where a red phone is ringing. A mysterious figure picks it up and answers “we’re closed” in what can only be the voice of Dan Aykroyd, himself.

Many fans are already hoping that both Raymond and Peter make a full return to the film, even briefly. There’s bound to be a few surprises still up director Jason Reitman’s sleeve, so fans had best wait it out. Either way, it would be nice to see Aykroyd reprise one of his most famous Hollywood movie roles.
