Ghostbusters: Afterlife will premiere in cinemas and only in cinemas, as per a recent declaration from the production itself.
The @Ghostbusters Twitter account delivered the confirmation with a clip that’s almost as brief as the message attached to it. Splicing a few highlights together from the film’s stirring official trailers, the hashtag-adorned tweet contains the unequivocal language, “exclusively in movie theaters this November.”
Having released the first official trailer for the sequel to 1989’s Ghostbusters II in Dec. 2019, Sony Pictures released Afterlife’s second trailer last month. The film’s original premiere date was July 10, 2020, though it was pushed to March 5, 2021 due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. After being forced to delay the film’s release twice more since then, Sony is now banking on a Nov. 11 debut in theaters for Ghostbusters: Afterlife.
On Aug. 23, Los Angeles’ CinemaCon hosted an unannounced screening of the eagerly awaited revival of the franchise that includes stars of the ’80s films Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver and Annie Potts. Initial reactions to the feature show promise, with Murray himself admitting that Afterlife “has the feel of the first one,” the 1984 Ivan Reitman classic. The forthcoming sequel was co-written and directed by Ivan’s son, Jason Reitman (Juno, Up in the Air).
Ghostbusters: Afterlife stars newcomers Finn Wolfhard, Carrie Coon, Paul Rudd and Mckenna Grace. The film will debut exclusively in theaters on Nov. 11.
