Gilmore Girls: 10 Character Parallels That Fans Missed

Every Gilmore Girls fan knows that Lorelai and Rory are different versions of each other, but several other characters share uncanny similarities.

Showrunner of Gilmore Girls, Amy Sherman-Palladino found a marvelous way to create a heartfelt series centered around mother-daughter duo, Lorelai and Rory Gilmore, and added other factors to make the dramedy pull on viewers’ heartstrings.

After seven seasons and a reboot, fans can now clearly see some of the parallels Sherman-Palladino and the Gilmore Girls writers added to tie the whole story together. It’s obvious that Rory and Lorelai have paralleled each other when Rory moved into her grandparents’ home (and was treated just as Lorelai was at that age) but there are other parallels that are deeper than the obvious that fans may have missed.

10 Lorelai & April + Sherry & Rory

When Christopher became serious with Sherry, Lorelai appeared jealous. It looked like Christopher finally found someone he loved more than his high school flame.

Sherry was the opposite of Christopher and Lorelai. She was organized, reliable, and very put-together. When she and Christopher were gearing up to have a baby, she wanted to have a closer relationship with Rory. But while Rory was old enough to make that decision for herself, Lorelai felt uneasy about it. Funny enough, when Lorelai tried getting closer to April, Anna hated the idea and didn’t allow it until Lorelai and Luke were married.

9 Rory Is The New Lorelai In A Year In The Life

At the end of “Fall,” Rory shocked the world when she told Lorelai she was pregnant. She was sleeping with Logan whenever she was in London but she also had a one-night stand when she was in New York. This led to the question: who was the father of Rory’s baby?

In retrospect, Rory is now the modern-day Lorelai. She could potentially be a single mother, raising her baby in Stars Hollow. If Logan is the baby’s father, this parallels Christopher and Lorelai’s story. Logan would be the wealthy father who could potentially be in and out of their lives.

8 Jess Is Rory’s Christopher

Whenever something in Lorelai’s life goes awry, she seeks Christopher. Christopher has been in her life since she was a teenager and he was always a source of comfort for her.

Some fans might think that Dean was that person for Rory but it could have been Jess. Jess wasn’t as needy as Dean, which is what drew Rory to him. Although Jess and Rory didn’t work out, the two always claimed to know each other on a deeper level and supported each other. Furthering this point, Christopher and Jess were both their family’s black sheep and didn’t always mesh with others.

7 Paris Is A Modern-Day Emily

Emily Gilmore and Paris Geller are the same woman in two different bodies. Both come from successful families, they’re independent, and they’re wildly opinionated. If Emily worked, she would have been the same success that Paris was in A Year in the Life.

Emily and Paris know what they want in life and don’t care who they insult or walk on to reach their goals. It’s shocking that these two didn’t have many scenes together because they would quite the dynamic duo.

6 Anna Nardini Is The Cynical Version Of Lorelai

If fans were blinded by the Anna-Luke-Lorelai scandal, they should take a closer look at how similar Lorelai and Anna actually are. They are both single mothers who didn’t have the father of their children in their lives much; they are also both business owners and wildly independent.

The biggest difference between Lorelai and Anna is that Lorelai didn’t leave Christopher in the dark surrounding their pregnancy. Luke, on the other hand, had no idea he had a child. If Lorelai never told Christopher about her pregnancy and she had no financial support, she could have been in Anna Nardini’s shoes.

5 The Haydens & The Huntzbergers

If Logan is parallel to Christopher, then their families are also parallel to each other. Christopher’s parents loathed Lorelai because of their teenaged pregnancy. They thought Lorelai ruined their son’s life and didn’t have much of a part in Rory’s upbringing.

Logan’s family wasn’t as spiteful as Christopher’s but they didn’t see Rory as their equal. They insulted her at dinner and didn’t think she was the right fit for the Huntzberger family. Even though Lorelai and Rory both came from the Gilmore family, they weren’t seen as good enough to the Haydens and the Huntzbergers.

4 Lorelai & Logan Have More In Common Than They Think

As much as Lorelai disliked Logan, they had more in common than she thinks. Both of them were raised in a similar way with high expectations. If Lorelai were born a male, she would have been groomed to follow in Richard’s footsteps — just as Logan was with Mitchum.

Both Lorelai and Logan had their times of rebellion, but Logan decided to follow through with the family business while Lorelai took another path.

3 Luke & Jess Are One In The Same

Luke isn’t Jess’ dad but they’re practically mirror images of each other. Both men are rough around the edges, a tad cynical, and keep to themselves. And both are in love with the Gilmore girls.

But it’s deeper than that. When Emily met Luke, she loathed him. She didn’t want her daughter to be with a man who wore a baseball cap and owned a diner. In addition, Lorelai paralleled her mother with Jess. Just like Emily didn’t want her daughter with Luke, Lorelai didn’t want her daughter with Luke’s nephew, Jess.

2 Mrs. Kim & Lane

Lane and her mother couldn’t be more different from each other. Mrs. Kim was devoted to her religion and believed her daughter should follow in her footsteps. Lane, on the other hand, was enthralled with rock ‘n’ roll and wanted nothing more than to go on tour with her band. Lane eventually spoke up for herself and got out of her mother’s house, but once she became pregnant, glimmers of her “mama” began to shine through.

On Lane’s wedding day, Mrs. Kim looked pale as a sheet when she found out her mom was coming into town for the wedding. The way she acted is just how Lane reacted whenever her mom was coming over. It also looked like Mrs. Kim’s dad was MIA, which also mirror’s Lane’s upbringing.

1 Jess & Rory

On the outside, Jess and Rory seem to be polar opposites, but there are more parallels beneath the surface. Both of them were raised by single mothers, both had a deep infatuation with books. Rory dropped out of Yale and Jess dropped out of high school, Jess encouraged Rory to go back to school and Rory encouraged Jess to do something with his life, and so on. Even when Jess and Rory aren’t dating, they have a hold on each other.
