For all the quirky nooks and crannies of Stars Hollow, Luke’s Diner is almost everyone’s favorite spot on Gilmore Girls. Pancake breakfasts and burger dinners keep residents going in the cold of winter, and they have a clear view out into the town where they can enjoy the bright sights of summer or the bold leaves of fall.

Lighthearted conversations and heavy life decisions happen at a place like Luke’s. Luke’s food and his no-nonsense demeanor keep people coming back for more. Countless scenes occur in the everyday joint, but which ones throughout the show’s seven seasons are the most memorable?

10 The Closing Scene Of The Pilot

Even though the pilot was not filmed on the Warner Brothers lot like the rest of the series, it still introduces viewers to the importance of Luke’s. The scene at the beginning of the first episode is somewhat forgettable, but the closing scene lets the sparks fly between Luke and Lorelai.

Luke has been to the bank and is dressed in nice jeans and a button-down shirt. Lorelai and Luke compliment each other on their looks, and Luke has the flirtiest face throughout the whole scene. It ends with Lorelai pumping Rory for information about “the boy,” Dean.

9 Luke Opens Up To Lorelai About His Father

The fourteenth episode of season one is the infamous “That Damn Donna Reed.” Aside from the Donna Reed storyline about gender roles between Dean and Rory, Lorelai and Luke dial up the chemistry one night at the diner. Luke is looking at paint colors with Lorelai and starts to talk about his dad.

He wasn’t as interested in hardware as his father, so he took his love for cooking and turned the old store into a diner. Luke and Lorelai find a spot behind the counter where Luke’s dad once wrote down an order. The two are crouching down on the floor and clearly have a connection, but Lorelai says, “I should go.”

8 Richard’s Stars Hollow Day

In season two, episode twelve, Richard is adjusting to free weekdays of retirement. Emily is exhausted from Richard wanting to follow her all the time, so she pawns him off on Lorelai for a day. Of course, the day includes a breakfast and coffee date at Luke’s.

Richard meets Luke and then reveals that he had already had breakfast at 5:30 am, which started with half a grapefruit – “it really is a terrific fruit!” Richard persuades Lorelai to have the fruit before her pancakes, so Luke walks over to Doose’s to procure a grapefruit. Later in the episode, Paris goes to Stars Hollow with Rory and acts quite strangely at Luke’s.

7 Lorelai Takes Over For Luke

When Luke’s uncle dies (season two, episode seventeen), he falls behind on diner business. Lorelai and Rory see that the place is packed and that Luke needs help, so they step in to take orders and wait tables. Of course, there has to be a weird Kirk moment when he tells Lorelai that he needs seven packets of Equal in his coffee.

It’s not often that Luke must step away from the business for personal reasons, and it’s sweet that his friends have his back. The help continues in a later scene where Lorelai amuses herself by using “diner lingo” to call out orders.

6 Rory & Lorelai Have Thanksgiving With Luke & Jess

After a long day of eating at the Kims’ house and then at Sookie and Jackson’s, Lorelai and Rory head to Luke’s. In this ninth episode of season three, Luke rejects the Gilmores’ fall flowers, Kirk has been scratched by the cat again, and Rory and Lorelai finally sit down to eat with Jess and Luke.

Lorelai tells Luke that he is the main event of the day, and Rory and Lorelai enjoy some girl talk before finishing the day at Richard and Emily’s.

5 Liz Gets A Stripper

In the summer setting of season four, episode twenty-one, it’s time for Liz and T.J. to get married. Before their Renaissance wedding, Liz wants to have some fun, and she chooses to let loose at the diner with her friends.

Luke sees a deliveryman come in and wasn’t expecting anything, but before he knows it, the deliveryman starts taking off his clothes. Crazy Carrie yells, “Shake it, doll, shake it!” Luke hilariously says, “No, don’t shake it in here,” but it’s too late.

4 Emily Gilmore Levels With Luke

In one of the most dramatic scenes of Gilmore Girls (season five, episode sixteen), Emily Gilmore asserts her authority over Lorelai’s personal life. This episode follows the drama of Emily and Richard’s vow renewal, and Lorelai and Emily are not speaking.

Luke tries to give Emily the cold shoulder, but she says she’ll “wait until things die down” and takes a seat by Kirk, then asking Kirk to leave. Emily says, “…Lorelai has her own ideas about what she thinks will make her happy. She wants you, Luke…You’ve won. Go back to her.” The scene feels ominous and visibly shows Luke’s discomfort.

3 Lorelai’s Proposal

Several episodes later (season five, episode twenty-two), Lorelai is sitting at the diner with Luke, just the two of them. He is trying to help her find a way to keep Rory enrolled at Yale, which shows that he loves Rory like his own daughter.

In the final minute of the episode, Lorelai looks at him and says, “Luke, will you marry me?” Luke leaves the episode on a cliffhanger by answering, “What?”

2 Luke Meets April For The First Time

Season six, episode nine introduces April Nardini for the first time. She walks into the diner with an elaborate bike helmet on her head, and Luke has no clue who she is.

April explains her science project – running DNA samples on three men’s hair locks to find her father. “Who’s my daddy? Huh? Catchy, right?” April gets her lock of hair and runs off, setting in motion an arc that fans still talk about all the time.

1 Kirk & The Car That Led To Kirk’s Diner

Luke becomes irate in the season seven premiere when Taylor decides to commence construction right outside the diner on a stoplight camera, but that’s only the beginning. In a ridiculous demonstration before the town, Kirk drives Taylor’s 1964 Ford Thunderbird right through the red light, as instructed.

Blinded by the flash of the camera, Kirk also drives the car right through Luke’s Diner! Lulu is later seen rubbing a cooling compress on Kirk at the diner. As memorable as these events are, they lead up to the comedic genius of Kirk’s Diner. Luke is talking to T.J. while cleaning up debris in the following episode and finds out that Kirk is serving food – from Luke’s menu – across the street. Kirk is dressed exactly like Luke as he keeps up his storyline of a revolving door of jobs.
