Owen Hunt, the handsome army veteran surgeon who joined the hit medical drama Grey’s Anatomy as a series regular in season 5, became a fan favorite almost immediately. Hunt joined as the Head of Trauma at Seattle Grace, and even became the Chief of Surgery, much to the surprise of the other attendings who were in running for this coveted position.

Over the years, Hunt has had his fair share of relationship drama, having been initially involved with the brilliant surgical-resident-turned-cardiothoracic-surgeon, Cristina Yang, and then with Amelia Shepherd, a character that came with its own baggage. 10 Owen Is Quite The Musician

Owen Hunt played the bagpipes during his school days and has also been shown playing the guitar.

The fact that he took up the bagpipes was revealed in the episode featuring The Lord of the Rings actor Billy Boyd whose son had been a victim of gun violence. Boyd plays a Scot with a band of bagpipers, which led Owen to mention how he had dabbled with them as a young boy. However, way back in season 6, Owen was shown expertly strumming the guitar during a Thanksgiving episode in which almost the entire hospital ended up at Derek and Meredith’s house.

In the episode ‘Song Beneath the Song’, in season 7, where Callie Torres suffers major injuries after she and Arizona end up in a car accident, many of the cast members take it in turns to sing their lines in a beautifully crafted musical episode, the only one in the series till date.

Owen Hunt is the only one apart from Callie and Miranda Bailey who made substantial vocal contributions in this episode. Callie, played by Sara Ramirez, is, of course, a well-known singer in her own right but turns out that McKidd is quite a singer as well.

8 Hunt Had A Fiancée When He Was In The Army

When Owen was serving as a military doctor in Iraq, he was engaged to his then-girlfriend Beth, an engagement that his sister Megan apparently did not support.

When Owen joined Seattle Grace, he chanced upon Beth who had accompanied her sick father to the hospital. The truth about his past relationship with her was revealed then along with the fact that Owen had not informed either Beth or even his own mother about his return to the States after his stint in Iraq.

7 Hunt’s Mother Dates A Young Firefighter

Every character in Grey’s Anatomy comes with its own set of quirks–not just the lead personalities but also their various relatives who appear recurrently through the series. Owen’s mother is one such character who has appeared only a handful of times but whose loneliness and need for love was established efficiently within the space of a single episode.

When Owen’s mother is admitted into the hospital, he finds out that she has been dating a man much younger than her, a firefighter, who, Owen is convinced, is after his mother’s property and money. Owen is initially very skeptical of John, the boyfriend, but later realizes that his mother has been lonely and seems to accept John for what he is.

6 Owen Might Have Betrayed His Sister

Owen’s sister Megan used to serve as a surgeon on the same troop in Iraq where Owen held the rank of major. Megan’s ambition was to become a flight surgeon and she depended on Owen for her recommendation.

However, Megan fails to get picked and she begins suspecting that Owen had actually ensured that she did not get the job instead of strengthening her chances. Owen had in all likelihood jeopardized his sister’s career by not honoring her choices. He feared for his sister’s well-being which might have led him to take such a step.

5 Owen Was Shot

After having served in Iraq, Owen Hunt ironically got shot inside Seattle Grace hospital by the grieving husband of a dead patient.

In the heart-stopping season 5 finale, ‘Death and All His Friends’, Owen was shot when he tried to reason with the shooter inside the OR where Cristina was operating on Derek at gunpoint. Most fans might remember that Derek and Alex Karev got shot during this incident, but Owen too had joined the bandwagon and was operated on by a very shaken Meredith Grey who had a miscarriage during the surgery.

4 Owen Was Triggered By A Ceiling Fan

One of the primary storylines involving Owen when he first joined the hospital, was that he was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.

At this time, fans will remember Owen had tried to throttle Cristina one night in his daze-like state. He later told Cristina that the fan on the ceiling served as a trigger for him as it reminded him of the blades of a helicopter and took him back to Iraq.

3 Owen Had Been On A Guilt Trip

Owen has been shown to be somewhat confused when it came to making personal decisions. In season 15, he was forced by his sister to visit a therapist who made him revisit his past to deal with his issues.

It was revealed that Owen had actually been on some sort of guilt trip his whole life. Little Owen had won an award in his science class when he was ten and gone home, bubbling with happiness. Tragically, it was then that his mother had informed him of his father’s death, leaving him guilt-ridden about feeling joy the same day his father had died.

2 Kevin McKidd Directed Over 20 Grey’s Episodes

A handful of the Grey’s cast has tried their hand at directing episodes over the years, including Chandra Wilson, Jesse Williams, and even Ellen Pompeo.

However, Kevin McKidd has been credited as the director of a staggering 20 plus episodes over the years. McKidd has become a veteran director having directed some important episodes with serious storylines. It makes sense that the cast too would be comfortable being directed by one of their own.

Fans would know that actor Patrick Dempsey who played ‘McDreamy’ Shepherd on Grey’s had quite the filmography before he joined the cast of the hit medical drama.

However, Kevin McKidd happens to be one of the only other actors who had a respectable repertoire of performances to his credit before he became Owen Hunt for the masses. He had performed both in films and stage when he got the call from Shonda Rhimes.
