A showcase explained several features and content coming to Hot Wheels Unleashed, including boss fights. Hot Wheels has been one of Mattel’s best-selling franchises since its debut in 1968. With billions of toy cars sold worldwide and numerous ventures in the entertainment industry, the brand is as popular as ever. Developer Milestone is planning to use the history and the future of the brand to create an experience that fans of both Hot Wheels and arcade racing can enjoy.

In the first gameplay trailer released for Hot Wheels Unleashed, mechanics like boosting and drifting were displayed. Additionally, the trailer gave a first look at how the cars will look. Rather than real cars, vehicles mirror their real-world counterparts. Complete with shimmering plastic bodies and wheels, cars race on the iconic orange tracks that have become a hallmark for any Hot Wheels set. However, there are more than classic collectible cars in this arcade racer.

During GameSpot’s showcase of Hot Wheels Unleashed, Milestone’s lead game designer Federico Cardini and executive producer Michele Caletti explained what players could expect from the game. Over 60 cars will be available at launch, and over 40 tracks will be available to drive on. Both cars and tracks are customizable with the in-game editor, and creations can be posted online for other players to download. How players obtain these vehicles are through rewards from various game modes. Accompanying a career mode, Hot Wheels Unleashed will have both online and local multiplayer, split-screen couch play, and boss fights. How boss fights will be implemented into the game will be explained later in a video.

The game will also have DLC and expansions, including new cars, parts, tracks, and more. Some DLC will be free, while others will come at a premium. More content is planned far beyond the launch date, the developers explained, but could not comment further at the time. The in-game track editor is the same one Milestone uses to design the tracks, giving players a suite of track pieces and obstacles to use. Cars will also have specific rarities, meaning some cars will be harder to unlock than others. More information will release this month, according to the developers.

Hot Wheels Unleashed is shaping up to be the biggest Hot Wheels game yet, and all of the information today highlights the passion the developers have for the brand and the game. Milestone has over 20 years of experience developing racing games, so the foundation is already there. What will make or break this game is the planned content, flexibility in the track editor, and vehicle novelty. However, fans will have to wait to learn more about those features later this month.
