In the show’s pilot, upon receiving Rory’s acceptance letter to Chilton, the first person Lorelai tells is her best friend, and the Independence Inn’s head chef, Sookie St. James. Consequently, she gets the invoice for Rory’s hefty enrollment fee, and knowing very well she can’t deposit it at short notice, her quirky friend comes to her rescue.

Season 1’s “Double Date” is a wonderful insight into Lane and Rory’s friendship. When Lane comes over to Rory’s and asks her to set up a double date with Dean and his friend, Todd, and she doesn’t need much convincing and agrees to it. Rory’s next move is to talk to her boyfriend, Dean, and convince him to ask his best friend out for Lane.

While Dean doesn’t immediately jump at the idea of the four of them going on a double date, he isn’t firm in declining either. Rory is offended by his words, “I’m just not sure that I see them together,” and quickly comes to her friend’s defense. Although the date doesn’t go well, the episode sure proves Rory wouldn’t flinch to stick up for Lane in her absence.

Rory lets Lane borrow her clothes, and Lorelai does Sookie’s hair and makeup. Sensing Sookie’s uneasiness at the restaurant, Lorelai takes her aside and reminds her not to put too much pressure on the whole evening.

Right from the start, the showmakers made it pretty clear that Paris and Rory were going to be friends for a long time and season 1’s “The Third Lorelai” was a nod in that direction.

In the episode, When Paris shows up at Rory’s door with a pile of clothes in hand, she’s welcomed in. Rory took time out of her busy schedule to make the whole getting-ready-for-a-date process less stressful for her frenemy. Rory voluntarily offered Paris her mother’s clothes and assured her everything was going to be alright.

When Mrs. Kim found out about Lane being in a band, she kicked her out and Rory took her in for a while. The two of them had a terrific time bunking together at Rory’s dorm at Yale.

Lane brought everyone coffee, cleaned the bathroom, and as Rory puts it was “practically invisible” throughout her stay. It understandably got a little crowded for Rory’s roommates, mainly because Lane wasn’t enrolled at Yale. So when the time came for her to move out, the two friends reminisced about their childhood dreams of living together in a house made of cheese. It was sad to see them part, especially because Rory was ready to let Lane go without a fight.

4 “You Brought Stars Hollow Here.” -Rory

Paris was right, after all, Lane did really bring back memories of Stars Hollow days and their childhood. Although Paris was angry at Rory for blabbing about her dating life to Lane, especially because she was seeing a Yale Professor (Asher Fleming), she shouldn’t have forced Lane out like that.

Rory liked having Lane around, but she didn’t have much choice, considering she shared her suite with three girls. Lane made a promise to visit Rory and for a split second did consider the possibility of them living together in a house made of cheese.

3 “It’s My Responsibility As Your Best Friend To Make Sure You Do Exciting Things, Even When You Don’t Want To.” – Sookie

In season 5’s “So… Good Talk,” when Lorelai asked Sookie for some of her braised lamb risotto leftovers, the latter immediately knew her friend was in a wallowing phase. Lorelai and Luke split up because of Emily’s meddling, so her Friday night dinner with the parents was out of the question.

Her roommate and daughter Rory was off to college and she was all by herself. When Sookie learned her friend had Netflixed all three A Star is Born movies, she planned a big girls’ Friday night out to stop her friend from becoming a couch potato.

When Rory has her first kiss with Dean in Doose’s Market in aisle 3, the first thing she does is rush down the street to tell her friend, Lane. It’s quite endearing to watch Lane ask Rory about the kissing experience over and over again.
