Gilmore Girls 10 Things That Make No Sense About Chilton

Chilton is a big part of Rory Gilmore’s life for the first few seasons of Gilmore Girls. She takes the opportunity to step onto the Ivy League path in a traditional New England way, even though it separates her from her friends. Rory learns a lot at Chilton and ultimately trades in her Harvard dream for life as a Yalie.

High school is a time to grow and develop ideas about the world. Rory manages to do those things in her teen years. Those plaid blue uniform days are nostalgic for fans of the show, but some things about Rory’s Chilton experience just don’t make any sense.

10 Taking Rory Away From Her Friends All Day

In the beginning of Gilmore Girls, viewers see that Rory is on the path to Chilton because of her extraordinary intelligence. She is to leave her public high school and, once finances are in order, don a uniform to attend high school in a supposedly more intellectually stimulating environment. It’s great that Rory has an opportunity to challenge herself academically, but what about the normalcy of her daily life? With Stars Hollow High, she has her classmates and her best friend just a short walk from her doorstep. It would be nice to see Lorelai and Rory consider other options at her existing school, like honors or AP courses.

9 Lorelai & Rory’s Willingness To Reconnect With Richard & Emily

To make Chilton a reality for Rory, Lorelai needs some serious financial help. The only way to complete Rory’s enrollment is to borrow money from Lorelai’s wealthy parents. This decision comes with a much higher price tag when Richard and Emily require weekly visits in exchange for the tuition payments. Given Lorelai’s complex history with her mother and father and Rory’s distance from them, it is a little surprising that the Gilmore girls go through with the Chilton deal.

8 Why Madeline & Louise Are At Chilton

No one is saying that Madeline and Louise are not smart, but they don’t necessarily show the same concern for their academics that Rory and Paris show. It becomes clear that these girls are all about a good party and don’t love hitting the books all the time, especially when fans see them again at the college level. No matter how well they can pass written tests, it’s interesting to imagine what Madeline and Louise would have said in their interviews to get into Chilton.

7 What Happens To Chad Michael Murray’s Character

Like other “bad boys” of the 1990s and early 2000s, Tristan leaves Chilton and exits the show because his character is sent to military school. After Chad Michael Murray left the role, he soared to fame on One Tree Hill. That doesn’t explain what became of Tristan in the long run, though.

In the 2016 revival, the character makes a brief cameo (played by Anton Narinskiy instead of Murray), but there’s no real deep dive into his life from Chilton to adulthood. Inquiring fans want to know.

6 Rory’s Lack Of Extracurricular Activities Compared To Paris

As Rory gets an inch closer to college in season two, she panics over not having enough extracurricular activities on her schedule. Paris is involved in all kinds of projects in order to boost her college applications. Since colleges look to see what students do beyond the classroom, Rory puts on her hard hat and takes a leaf out of Paris’s book. She doesn’t keep up with her newfound commitments, though. Rory goes to school and then goes home to hang out with Dean and her friends and family. She takes part in academic events at Chilton here and there, but her temporary zeal for resume-boosting is a mystery.

5 Commuting The Distance From Stars Hollow To Chilton

A big aspect of Rory’s high school life is that she must commute from Stars Hollow, Connecticut to Hartford, Connecticut in order to attend Chilton. Lorelai is Rory’s driver occasionally, but until she has a car of her own, Rory takes the bus to school. Stars Hollow is based on Washington and Washington Depot, Connecticut. Those towns are easily an hour from Hartford. The distance between point A and point B is mentioned, but that bus ride doesn’t seem nearly as long as it would in real life.

4 Conduct In The Classroom Environment

No high school students are perfect, but many prep schools have stringent disciplinary policies. As funny as it is, Lorelai’s “laundry day” attire for Rory’s first day at Chilton would not be acceptable. Within the classroom itself, students in reputable private schools are often held to the highest standards of conduct. It isn’t easy being a teenager, but many of them behave respectably during class sessions. Outbursts like the one that Paris and Rory share before they become friends are not the norm.

3 Resemblance To Real-Life Prep Schools

Gilmore Girls 10 Things That Make No Sense About Chilton

Prep schools on sprawling green meadows abound throughout New England. The inspiration for Chilton is believed to be Choate Rosemary Hall, a gorgeous campus in Wallingford, Connecticut. Another likely candidate is The Frederick Gunn School, formerly The Gunnery, in Amy Sherman-Palladino’s former vacation town of Washington, Connecticut. Hartford, too, is surrounded by prep schools in real life.

The question is, how much research went into the fictional prep school creation of Chilton? In 2000, Sherman-Palladino told the Hartford Courant that Hartford made sense with its insurance and old money. “It’s got the history, but it’s still more of a city. It’s far enough away that it would have those fabulous, scary, exclusive boarding schools that I want her to go to — [the kind] where the original principal is, like, buried in the backyard.”

2 The Ivy League Effect

Another true-to-life aspect of Chilton is that it is a feeder school for Ivy League colleges, most notably Harvard and Yale. Rory is driven in the college admissions process and always comes back to her love for learning. Fans know how much she enjoys reading, studying, and thinking.

However, for someone who is Yale-bound, Rory enjoys quite a few leisurely activities. She hangs out with friends and boyfriends after school, attends the occasional party, and enjoys fancy dinners with her grandparents each week. Some serious students might be able to strike this balance, but other teens in prep schools have such heavy workloads (along with athletics or the arts) that they rarely have a moment for anything else.

1 Lorelai Dating A Chilton Teacher

Max Medina might be the one that got away from Lorelai Gilmore. The handsome literature teacher wins her heart but can’t garner her commitment for the long haul. Compatibility aside, Max is a teacher, and Lorelai is a parent. Some schools discourage relationships between educators and parents or guardians. Rory understandably feels weird about Mr. Medina going out with her mom, too. The brief romance is just one of the puzzling aspects of Chilton’s system.
