They said it would never happen, but the release of the fabled Snyder cut is becoming increasingly real, as images and clips continue to emerge from the director’s camp. When Justice League released theatrically in 2017, fans weren’t just disappointed in the film’s lack of quality, but also by the clear alterations made after Joss Whedon took over from Zack Snyder. As the extent of those changes became more apparent, calls for Snyder’s original cut became louder until Warner Bros. could no longer ignore the demand, and announced a 2021 HBO Max release for the Snyder cut.
Zack Snyder is now busying himself applying the finishing touchings to his Justice League, and juicy snippets are emerging thick and fast. Fans have already been afforded glimpses at the villainous duo of Darkseid and Steppenwolf, while Henry Cavill’s Superman in his black suit has also been unveiled. Brief clips of Wonder Woman and various others have emerged, and Snyder cut fever shows no sign of slowing down, with plenty of surprises still in store if the rumors and speculation are anything to go by.
DC’s Fandome event is set to take place this weekend, and will mark the premiere of the first true Snyder cut trailer. Before then, the director has offered a short teaser to whet appetites, and the footage contained within is already prompting intrigue and discussion online. Here are all of the new scenes and reveals from the latest Justice League Snyder cut teaser.
Resurrected Superman
The first shot featured in the new Justice League Snyder cut teaser depicts a revived, topless Clark Kent wandering around his old monument. This is similar to the 2017 Justice League, where Clark returns to the same location, again just in his pants, and looks around forlornly before engaging in battle with the rest of the League. This specific shot, however, didn’t feature in the theatrical cut, where Superman bursts out of the Kryptonian ship, lands at his monument, and quickly gets ready for battle. The lingering, overhead angle on this new Snyder cut image implies there’ll be more time for Clark to reflect during this scene.
Thanks to mustache-gate, it’s evident that Whedon’s reshoots vastly altered Superman’s arc in Justice League, and this includes his resurrection. It remains to be seen exactly how Clark might return in the Snyder cut, but fans have long believed that bringing Earth’s protector back to life would be a more emotionally charged process, exploring the legacy of Superman and hitting upon some darker notes. This was previously suggested by the leaked image of the League visiting Clark’s grave, and the sharper focus on Superman’s monument supports that line of thinking. Expect to see a more detailed resurrection for Superman in the Snyder cut.
“If You Seek His Monument…”
Of course, the biggest element (other than Clark himself, obviously) in this opening teaser scene is the quote on the ground – “if you seek his monument, look around you.” One of many odd creative changes in 2017’s Justice League comes when the newly-resurrected Superman arrives in Heroes Park and stares at his broken monument. Clark appears fixated with something at ground level, but the Justice League soon land and a fight kicks off before the audience discover what first caught his attention. Clark is actually looking at the Christopher Wren quote written where his monument once stood in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice.
It’s not clear why the theatrical cut of Justice League obscured the quote itself, despite showing Clark looking directly at it. Perhaps this was part of a wider attempt to distance the film from Batman V Superman, or maybe Whedon simply wanted to get to the action quicker. But it’s certainly no coincidence that Snyder’s new teaser gives a full shot of Clark looking at the wording – a clear message from Snyder that the original intention of this scene will be restored. Superman will be forced to consider his positive impact on the world after coming back to life, and this will set up a more full-bodied resurrection arc in the Justice League Snyder cut, with the Superman return occurring closer to the beginning. Snyder’s added symbolism can be seen in how the monument “instructs” Clark to look around him for his legacy, and the first thing he sees are the other members of the Justice League.
Cyborg’s Origin Story
Even more so than Supes, Cyborg is lined up as the biggest beneficiary of the Snyder cut, with swathes of Victor Stone’s story cut from the 2017 Justice League release. In assembling its superhero team, Justice League was always burdened with introducing 3 major new characters to the DCEU – Aquaman, Flash and Cyborg. But while Snyder describes Cyborg as the heart of his movie, the character felt like just another superhero in the original version. Much of Victor’s life before becoming partly-mechanical was chopped from the movie, including scenes featuring his mother, while the death of Victor Stone’s father, Silas, was also removed.
Following the revived Superman scenes, the new Snyder cut teaser moves to Cyborg in his college football days, assuring fans that the new version of Justice League will take a deeper dive into Victor’s youth. These shots are set before Ray Fisher’s character was transformed into Cyborg by his father and take place at the Gotham City University stadium. In truth, every member of the Justice League required improved characterization in the 2017 release, but Zack Snyder is already keeping his promise that Cyborg will be the lifeblood of his cut.
Jimmy Olsen Actor Cameo
In a neat touch, Justice League (while Zack Snyder was still at the helm) afforded a cameo to Marc McClure, the actor who played Jimmy Olsen in the 1978 Superman movie. McClure originally appeared as a police officer during the Heroes Park battle between Superman and the Justice League, but even though McClure is shown in one of the film’s early trailers, this specific cameo wasn’t present in the theatrical cut. Instead, Geoff Johns arranged for the actor to come back during the reshoots and film another cameo as a prison officer where Barry’s father is held.
Snyder’s teaser reinstates the original Marc McClure cameo, complete with a flaming tank careering towards the hapless officer. Once again, the inclusion of this image sends a clear message that whatever was amended after Snyder’s Justice League departure is being restored for the 2021 edit. Interestingly, McClure has revealed in interviews that he also filmed scenes with Lois Lane, but these were also cut from the finished movie. McClure’s comments suggest that fans can not only expect more of his police officer in the Snyder cut, but more of Amy Adams’ Lois Lane also.
The League Arrives
The final scene in the new Justice League Snyder cut teaser depicts the arrival of the League at Heroes Park, presumably to confront a confused and itchy Superman. We see the feet and legs of Aquaman, Wonder Woman, Flash and Cyborg as they land dramatically on the ground, and this is completely different to how the scene plays out in the 2017 version. In Whedon’s reshoots, these same four characters (in the same order, no less) simply arrive behind Superman as he gazes toward the “if you seek his monument” quote. It’s a far more understated entrance compared to what has been revealed of the Snyder cut thus far, and gives the sense that the League expect Superman to be his usual self, whereas the Snyder cut scene feels more geared towards a battle.
What can be said with confidence is that the Heroes Park battle will be entirely different to the scrap fans are already familiar with. As hinted by Marc McClure, this sequence was heavily edited from Snyder’s original vision, and the new entrance shown in the teaser is testament to that, setting a completely different tone and intention for the scene. The Snyder cut’s more combative arrival of the Justice League also leans into the promise of a darker Superman, and a less breezy approach in general.
The New (Old) Colorization
Speaking of making things darker, there’s a huge visual difference in the DC Fandome Snyder cut teaser. Aside from the different aspect ratio and notable improvements on certain effects, the color grading is entirely changed from the theatrical release. In cinemas, Justice League’s Heroes Park battle was drenched in a bright dawn light, and this is no surprise, since Warner Bros. allegedly tasked Whedon with lightening up the film, both figuratively and literally, after Batman V Superman was accused of being too dark (by Wade Wilson, no less). The changed colorization was widely panned by fans upon release, both the obvious lightening of some scenes and the overbearing red of the finale.
Zack Snyder had already confirmed that his cut would restore the original color grading seen in Justice League’s early trailers, and that’s evidenced here in the teaser. Both the Heroes Park sequence and Cyborg’s football game take place in the evening, and these scenes now possess a visual consistency with Man of Steel and Batman V Superman. Fans will no doubt be hoping that the return of Snyder’s shadowy cinematography doesn’t stop at the visuals, but extends to the tone of Justice League also.
