Gilmore Girls 5 Episodes Where Lorelai Was Just Like Emily (& 5 She Was The Total Opposite)

From the pilot of Gilmore Girls, Lorelai and Emily are set up as complete opposites. Emily is portrayed as strict, formal, and uptight, in stark contrast to Lorelai and her quirky, high-energy, freewheeling ways. Lorelai spends most of the early seasons vocally hating her mother, and loudly telling everyone that she is the polar opposite to the woman that raised her.

And in some ways, Lorelai is right – she’s not focused on wealth and status, she prefers to work hard and keep things casual, and she hates limitations… but in a surprising number of ways, she and Emily are almost identical. It’s clear that her upbringing had an impact on her, and much as she might hate it, there’s a lot of Emily in Lorelai (and most likely, in Rory too).

10 Identical: Taking Control Of Work Situations

Gilmore Girls 5 Episodes Where Lorelai Was Just Like Emily (& 5 She Was The Total Opposite)

Lorelai might like to portray herself as a casual, laid-back woman, but when it comes to work situations, she is absolutely in control. Whether it is at the Independence Inn or at the Dragonfly, she is always on top of things, knows exactly how to handle people… and occasionally gets so stressed about having things done to her standards that she can get rude – as Sookie can attest! This is so pronounced that her mother even comments on it when she visits her daughter at work. And no wonder she is impressed, this is just like Emily. Her work at the DAR and with organizing parties for her husband always sees her in control, and sometimes getting snappy, just like Lorelai does. It’s clear both women need to be in charge – which may be part of the reason that the two butt heads!

9 Opposite: How They Travel

Gilmore Girls 5 Episodes Where Lorelai Was Just Like Emily (& 5 She Was The Total Opposite)

Both Lorelai and Emily go to Europe over the course of the series (more than once), and their approach to their trips shows just how different they are. Lorelai, when she and Rory go backpacking, wants to set out for the horizon with a huge bag and no expectations or plans other than adventure and hostels – whereas Emily plans her trip to Europe with Rory down to the moment. She stays at only the finest hotels, and ones that she has been to before, whereas Lorelai wants to discover new things on her travels. Interestingly, though, Rory seems to take more after Emily than Lorelai, in this, as she enjoys organization, and she even creates a secret itinerary for her trip with Lorelai and gives it to Babette.

8 Identical: Cannot Cook

Gilmore Girls 5 Episodes Where Lorelai Was Just Like Emily (& 5 She Was The Total Opposite)

Lorelai is positioned as more comfortable in the kitchen than Emily – as she can reheat leftovers and make a frozen pizza, whereas Emily is shown to be utterly confounded by even turning the oven on. However, it’s worth pointing out that while Lorelai can heat up junk food, neither she nor Emily are capable of actually cooking a meal from scratch. Both women have plenty of other skills, but it’s surprising that Lorelai would be so much like her mother in terms of an inability (or unwillingness) to cook. Perhaps this can be traced back to her upbringing, though. If Lorelai was never around anyone cooking, but just has her mother’s string of housekeepers provide food, she would never have learned.

7 Opposite: Coffee And Alcohol

While both women do drink, there is a clear difference in their beverage of choice. Lorelai has cocktails before Friday Night Dinners, and out at events, but she is a coffee fiend. Her first lines in the series are even about her love of coffee!

And while Emily does drink coffee, of course, she is definitely more of a drinker – she takes a flask to the Yale game, she always has a full bar cart ready to go, and does cocktail hour every night, and makes a bloody mary at the game that makes Lorelai choke with the strength of it. This preference (and difference) also reflects their respective outlooks – Lorelai, always high energy and moving quickly, and Emily, a little more sedate, and a quiet sipper.

6 Identical: Jealous of Their Kid’s Other Parents

Gilmore Girls 5 Episodes Where Lorelai Was Just Like Emily (& 5 She Was The Total Opposite)

Both Lorelai and Emily deal with the feeling that someone else is raising their child- or grandchild – and neither of them deal with it well. Emily gets upset when she comes to the Independence Inn and meets Mia, seeing how close Mia was with Lorelai and Rory when Rory was a baby. Lorelai might like to think that she would never behave this way, but when Christopher was with Sherry, and Sherry wanted to spend time with Rory, Lorelai threw a fit. It seems that even though Lorelai and Emily have a much more strained relationship than Lorelai and Rory, neither woman is capable of handling their jealousy when someone else feels like a mother figure to their child.

5 Opposite: Talking To Employees & Tradespeople

Gilmore Girls 5 Episodes Where Lorelai Was Just Like Emily (& 5 She Was The Total Opposite)

One of Lorelai’s best traits is her friendliness. She is consistently shown to be making connections with everyone she meets, to the extent of treating many of them almost like family! This is especially clear in the episodes where she is renovating the Dragonfly, and chats to all the workmen by name, and knows exactly who they are (and of course, she knows Dean particularly well). However, Emily is so bad at knowing her employees’ names that she routinely forgets the names of her maids – maybe because she fires them so often. It’s interesting that even in A Year In The Life, when Emily is shown forging a real connection with a woman working for her and her family, she still doesn’t really know her name, or where she’s from.

4 Identical: Involvement in Rory’s Life

While Lorelai would be appalled to think that her parenting style is anything like her mother’s, both women are arguably a little too involved in her life – although they show it in very different ways. Emily (and Richard) gets involved in all the details – showing up to Rory’s first day of school, reading all her newspaper articles (and saving them), going to the Yale events, and even parent’s day (which Lorelai didn’t love).

Lorelai may think that she’s more of a hands-off parent, but she’s the one who is always on the phone to Rory, and even gets upset when they are ‘only’ emailing each other every day. She also stays at Yale on Rory’s first night (at her request, admittedly) and is essentially a mother-figure to Paris.

3 Opposite: Their Sense of Style

Gilmore Girls 5 Episodes Where Lorelai Was Just Like Emily (& 5 She Was The Total Opposite)

This is something of a given, but it’s so pronounced in the series that it’s worth mentioning. Emily is, at all times, elegantly put together in the appropriate clothing, usually skirts and heels, and would never dream of wearing anything too loud. Lorelai, meanwhile, seems to pride herself on wearing wild and outrageous clothing, glitter, sequins, prints, and more. Of course, part of this is a nod to Lorelai as a rebellious teen who didn’t grow up, but it’s also a clear visual way to represent their differing personalities. Interestingly, by the end of A Year In The Life, both women’s styles have shifted closer to each other. Lorelai’s outfits are still brighter and bolder, but more stylish and put together than her early outfits. Emily, meanwhile, starts wearing jeans and t-shirts, before finally finding a more casual style that suits her more casual way of living.

2 Identical: Blowing Up At Things

Gilmore Girls 5 Episodes Where Lorelai Was Just Like Emily (& 5 She Was The Total Opposite)

While Lorelai is usually portrayed as the more laid back of the two women (and in many ways, she is), mother and daughter have similar reactions to things going wrong – especially when it comes to their relationships. They are both prone to extremely reactive gestures – whether it is the terrible decision of storming out on Luke and running to Christopher, cutting off contact with Rory when she wanted to leave Yale, blowing up at Richard when he wasn’t paying her enough attention and kicking him out, or even trying to buy a plane. Both women clearly would benefit from a little more emotional balance – so seeing them in therapy together in A Year In The Life wasn’t a bad thing!

1 Opposite: Realistic Expectations For Teenagers

The big issue that drove Lorelai and Emily apart was, of course, Rory – and Lorelai becoming pregnant as a teenager. But one area where Emily and Lorelai are true opposites are their expectations for teens and young adults. Emily’s shock at Lorelai becoming pregnant may have been a long time before the start of the show, but the fact that she seems equally shocked at the idea that Rory would be sleeping with Logan in the poolhouse shows that Emily’s ideas on what teens do are very naive. Lorelai, meanwhile, has a very clear idea of what her daughter is likely to be up to – and in many ways, has reasonable expectations around things like Spring Break or occasionally drinking a little too much punch. This, more than any other similarity or difference, may be the reason that the two are so different when it comes to relationships with their daughters… even when those daughters are all grown up.
