Gilmore Girls 5 Times Rory Was Actually The Parent (& 5 Where Lorelai Stepped Up)

The show Gilmore Girls depicted the strong bond between mother-daughter duo Rory and Lorelai Gilmore. Over the course of seven seasons (and a Netflix revival!), the two of them suffered heartbreak, graduated college, and grew up alongside one another.

Because of their small age gap, sometimes viewers found Rory being more of a parent than her mother Lorelai was, whether that be displayed in emotional maturity or logical decisions like applying to multiple colleges instead of just one. Other times Lorelai showed her strong maternal instincts, and steered her daughter in the right direction as she helped her learn from her own past.

10 Rory – The First Day at Chilton

On Rory’s first day at a prestigious school that would surely help get her into Harvard, Lorelai overslept and was fresh out of clean clothes to wear as she accompanied her teenage daughter.

Rory was the more responsible one in this situation, waking her mother up while Lorelai trotted into Chilton not exactly looking like a mature adult.

9 Lorelai – Telling Rory She’s Going To Chilton

After Rory met and flirted with the handsome boy from Chicago at her school in the pilot episode, she was no longer sure she wanted to go to prep school. Lorelai, having worked hard at her job at the inn to get Rory to a place where they could even think about affording such a thing, was justifiably angry that her daughter would throw everything away for a boy she just met.

This led to Lorelai’s infamous, “Does he have a motorcycle? If you’re throwing your life away he better have a motorcycle!” speech, and was the first time viewers got to see Lorelai lay down the law as the parent in their unique mother-daughter relationship.

8 Rory – The Max Medina Situation

Gilmore Girls 5 Times Rory Was Actually The Parent (& 5 Where Lorelai Stepped Up)

After Rory started at Chilton, Lorelai hit it off with her English teacher, Mr. Max Medina. While Lorelai knew it might not be the best idea to get involved with one of her daughter’s teachers, she eventually gave in and even got engaged to him.

Rory, for her part, expressed to Lorelai that she believed it to be a bad idea, but handled everything very gracefully, even coming very much on board with the whole situation. But this also put Rory in an awkward spot when they broke up, and she had to act the most adult of all despite being the only child in the situation.

7 Lorelai – Rory’s Heartbreaks

Lorelai was the perfect mom for anyone experiencing a devastating breakup. She was ready to wallow with Rory following her (first) split with Dean and was at her side when Dean dumped her again and she pursued Jess instead.

Lorelai made Rory’s high school graduation special despite Jess having just taken off on her and pulled back her hair as she drunkenly threw up after facing rejection from Logan. Lorelai was always there for Rory, even if she didn’t agree with the romantic choices she was making.

6 Rory – Knowing Lorelai’s Heart

Rory watched as for years her mother went back to her high school sweetheart, pined after the man who served them coffee, and had flings that were never going to last. Rory knew that Luke was the one for her mother, and was at her side after their first breakup to help Lorelai make sense of it.

She put a brave face when her parents announced their marriage in Season 7, but privately expressed her concerns to Lorelai about how she felt it wasn’t right. Rory wasn’t afraid to call out her mom on her poor decisions and always had her best interest in mind like a parent does.

5 Lorelai – Calling Out Rory When She Needed It

Lorelai wanted to share the big news with Rory that she had just kissed Luke for the first time in the Season 4 finale, but it was overshadowed by Rory having slept with her married ex-boyfriend, Dean.

Lorelai was very forward in telling Rory that her actions were hurtful to many people, including herself. She held Rory accountable for her actions which was good for Rory in the long run.

4 Rory – Telling Christopher to Back Off

In Season 5 when Lorelai was finally beginning a happy relationship with Luke years of will-they-won’t-they, Rory’s dad Christopher was starting to come back around. Rory drove up to his place in Boston and told him like it was; that her mom was happy and he was not allowed to ruin it.

A lot of the interactions between Rory and her dad showed her being far more mature than he was ever capable of, and he failed to listen to her when he showed up at Emily and Richard’s vow renewal ceremony.

3 Lorelai – Drawing Boundaries When Rory Dropped Out

Lorelai was supportive enough when Rory was arrested for stealing a yacht and felt directionless following harsh words from Mitchum Huntzberger, but she drew the line at Rory dropping out of Yale.

Lorelai made it abundantly clear that she understood and empathized with Rory’s position, but would not tolerate her throwing away her future and halting an education they both worked very hard for because of one rude comment from her boyfriend’s father. It was an important lesson Rory needed to learn.

2 Rory – Pushing Lorelai Closer to Her Parents

Rory grew up knowing the tumultuous relationship between her grandparents and her mother, but she grew close to them as she got older anyway. She balanced her relationships between Lorelai and Emily and Richard and encouraged her mother to continue going to Friday Night Dinners even after Chilton had been paid off.

Rory was partially responsible for helping Lorelai see the good and the love in Emily and Richard, and pushed her to develop a kinship with them that would last after she moved away following her college graduation.

1 Lorelai – Supporting Rory’s Dreams, Always

Despite having Rory at just 16, Lorelai never let anything stop her from giving her daughter everything she never had, or more so, everything she ran away from. When Rory dreamt of going to Harvard to be a journalist, Lorelai supported her undoubtably and made sure she would get that opportunity despite living in the small town of Stars Hollow.

Lorelai never gave Rory any indication that there was anything she couldn’t do or accomplish and gave her the tools and resources necessary to succeed.
