Emily and Lorelai Gilmore are constantly fighting over their different lifestyles. But, according to Reddit, they also have some things in common.

To a casual viewer watching Gilmore Girls, Lorelai and Emily couldn’t seem more different. The famous mother and daughter sport very different styles; Emily donning matching sets while Lorelai chooses neon pink tie-dye, cut-off jean shorts, and cowboy boots. Lorelai eats Pop-Tarts and guzzles coffee, and Emily has a chef and D.A.R. afternoon tea.
Also, there’s the fact that Lorelai ran away from her high-class life at sixteen to raise her daughter and live out of an inn, which is a far cry from Emily’s life of decorum and social obligations. So, how could these two have anything in common? Well, Reddit users have chimed in, and have many thoughts about the pair’s differences and similarities.
9 Identical: Their Parenting Styles
Lorelai always resented that Emily pushed her own ideals onto Lorelai, wanting her to do the things that Emily thought were important and to value the same things that she did. But, viewers see Lorelai do that same thing to Rory.
She pressures Rory to prioritize school over all things, and when Rory implies that she might not want to attend Chilton because of Dean, Lorelai shuts her down and “pulls an Emily” (basically saying “This is how it’s going to be, and you’re going to like it!) She even practically disowns Rory when she takes time off from Yale, not unlike how Emily distanced herself from Lorelai when she refused to marry Christopher. Both mothers thought they were just doing what was best.
8 Opposite: Their Dating Life
Although there is not too much said about Emily’s early love life (besides that she broke up Richard and Pennylin Lott), we do know that she was completely devoted to her marriage with Richard in a traditional way, settling into the role of housewife for many years before their brief separation and subsequent reunion.
Lorelai has had a much different relationship with commitment and didn’t really look to settle down. Each woman did what was right for her, but it is a difference between them.
7 Identical: They Are Both Master Manipulators
Emily can be very controlling and manipulative, as evidenced by the Christopher vow-renewal invitation disaster. She thinks she’s doing what’s best for her daughter, but it’s really about control.
Similarly, Lorelai uses manipulation to get what she thinks is the “best” outcome for Rory. For example, she has a secret talk with Dean about distracting Rory from her budding friendship/relationship with Jess. Later, she tries to get Emily and Richard to convince Rory to go back to Yale when she takes a break because that’s what Lorelai wants her to do. Both women become very set in their ways once their mind is made up.
6 Opposite: Their Palates
The show has repeatedly shown the traditional Lorelai and Rory smorgasbord, often including Pop-Tarts, mac and cheese, and sometimes dessert sushi. Emily has a more refined palate (paired with a private chef) and she chooses dishes like paella, duck, and caviar.
Although Lorelai eats most of the food at Friday Night Dinners, she’d much prefer a drive-through or delivery, and Emily is usually taken aback listening to the girls talk about their favorite foods.
5 Identical: They Are Both Protective Of Their Maternal Role
No one would call Chris a perfect father, but when he calls Lorelai to ask if Rory can spend time with him and Sherry, Lorelai keeps it a secret. When Rory confronts her about the call, she immediately gets defensive, calling Sherry her “stupid stepmom” and shouting “I have dibs on you. Not him, me!”
For Emily, there’s Mia, the owner of the Independence Inn. At Mia’s wedding, Emily is visibly uncomfortable and irate whenever the topic of Mia and Lorelai’s mother-daughter relationship is brought up, upset at the idea that Mia may have been a better mother figure to Lorelai, and was there when she wasn’t.
4 Opposite: Their Media Repertoire
There are very few who can battle with Lorelai’s movie, music, and television intake. It feels like she and Rory are dropping some cinematic or pop culture reference every two minutes on the show.
While Emily can partake in the one-liners from classic Hollywood films, she prefers to sit down with a book over binging ’80s flicks and Us Weekly. Lorelai has a taste for trash TV even, and viewers know that such things are far below Emily’s high brow.
3 Same: They Love Routine
Routines are very important to the Gilmore Girls; even when Luke himself made Lorelai breakfast, she didn’t want to eat it, because “I always have breakfast at Luke’s.” Emily similarly loves settling into a routine, the words “But we always…” are never far from leaving her lips.

She holds their Friday Night Dinners as a sacred part of her weekly routine, and they always follow a pattern of: drinks, dinner, coffee. Both women thrive off of knowing what’s going to happen next, and when change is introduced, they don’t always handle it in the best ways.
2 Opposite: Their Styles Of Comebacks
There’s no lack of wit in the Gilmore family, but Lorelai and Emily have very different ways of showing it off. Where Lorelai tends to spurt out a pop culture reference or sarcastic joke, Emily tends to go right for the throat with a cutting insult.
A fan favorite of the family matriarch was her amazing takedown of Shira Huntzberger.
1 Same: They Eventually Come Around When They Make Mistakes
Both Lorelai and Emily can have kneejerk emotional reactions to things. Lorelai’s visceral response to Rory dropping out of Yale results in her kicking Rory out and not speaking to her. Emily’s pride kept her from maintaining a relationship with Lorelai for many years after she ran away.
But, after some time, all both women want to do is be a part of their daughters’ lives. Emily and Lorelai’s relationship is tumultuous at times, but they both come around to make conscious efforts to make things better. On their spa weekend, Emily expresses regret that she and Lorelai’s relationship isn’t like Lorelai and Rory’s, and she opens up. They eventually bond in their own unique way and steal matching robes from the room.
