The connection between Lorelai and Rory is sought after by Gilmore Girls fans everywhere. As a mother-daughter duo, the two valued their quality time. One of their favorite things to do together was their epic movie nights. Old classics are binged, junk food is consumed, and sweatpants are preferred. No one does movie night like the Gilmore ladies.

If fans are looking forward to a movie night at home and want to do it up like Lorelai and Rory, there are few rules that must be followed. After all, movie nights are serious business. In “The Fundamental Things Apply,” Lorelai told Luke some of the rules that applied to movie nights and they cannot be broken.

9 Get The Movie Playlist Ready

Before movie night even begins, viewers should know what they’re about to watch. Going into movie night blindly means wasting valuable time on the selection process. There’s no time to waste on movie nights!

Lorelai and Rory have watched and namedropped a ton of movies over the years, but a few notable ones to consider are Casablanca, Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory, Hardbodies, West Side Story, The Shining, and Flashdance.

8 Grab The Snacks

What’s a movie night without going to Doose’s for snacks? Okay, Gilmore Girls fans aren’t as lucky as Lorelai and Rory to have a Doose’s in their neighborhood but hopping over to the pharmacy or grocery store for packaged snacks and candies is one of the main events for movie nights.

7 Put On Those PJs

One cannot watch endless movies and eat countless candies without a good pair of pajamas or sweatpants. Cozy clothes make movie-watching so much more enjoyable. One can eat all the junk food they desire without jeans restricting themselves.

Pajamas are one of the things that Lorelai doesn’t get enough credit for. Her robes and matching pajama sets make it feel like she’s always ready for a slumber party.

6 Browse Those Takeout Menus

Eating supermarket snack foods is just one part of movie night — the other part is take-out. If Gilmore Girls fans are hungrier for more than just Pop-Tarts, they can order takeout to have dinner while viewing their favorite movies. Lorelai and Rory’s go-to was usually pizza or Chinese food.

However, fans may feel inclined to order burgers and fries from their own version of Luke’s Diner. Chili cheese fries, onion rings, hamburgers, mac & cheese — it’s all up for grabs on movie night.

5 Have A Book Nearby

Rory loves curling up with a good book. Her bedroom is full of them and she always has one in her bag. And although movie nights are designated for movies, there are times where Lorelai gets distracted, there’s a phone call, or an unexpected visitor. Disruptions are bound to happen on a movie night, and when they do… pull out that book. Better yet, read a book that’s Rory- or Jess-approved like The Bell Jar, Anna Karenia, To Kill A Mockingbird, or Pride & Prejudice.

4 Prep The Coffee Pot

It’s not a good day in the Gilmore girls’ lives without coffee. Luke’s Diner’s coffee is their preferred source.

In the Gilmore household, coffee is always available. After all, there’s nothing Lorelai and Rory love more than sipping on hot coffee after a long night of movie-watching and snacking.

3 The Perfect Guest List

A movie night is only as fun as the people around you. Lorelai and Rory knew each other inside and out. Picking a movie was always easy because they had the same taste. To keep the movie night smooth, invite people over who have the same taste in movies or humor.

Luke, Dean, and Paris were lucky enough to enjoy a movie night with the Gilmore girls. Friends, family members, partners — movie nights are better when others are joining in on the fun.

2 Set Up The Living Room

Movie nights can be enjoyed in a bedroom with cozy comforters and soft lighting but most of the movie nights enjoyed by Lorelai and Rory were done in the living room. According to Lorelai, you have to hop on the cushions a few times to make your mark because it’s not allowed during the movie. Grabbing some extra blankets, pillows, and dimming the lights will transform any living room into the coziest spot for a movie night with loved ones.

1 Hide Those Phones

Gilmore Girls debuted in the early 2000s, a time when cellphones were just getting big. It wasn’t uncommon if someone didn’t have one or didn’t want one, and most people still had land lines.

But these days, everyone has a cell phone and it’s odd when someone doesn’t. And sadly, cell phones can be a huge distraction on movie nights. To avoid disruptions, keep cell phones tucked away so that everyone can enjoy what’s going on on the screen and in the present moment. Movie nights wouldn’t have been half as fun if Rory was scrolling on Instagram the entire time.
