Foundation News & Updates Everything We Know

Apple TV+ is bring the seminal sci-fi series Foundation to screens as a 10-episode series. Part of Apple TV+’s ambitious streaming slate, the epic science-fiction drama series is based on the Isaac Asimov novel of the same name and its prequels and sequels, telling an expansive story of the decline and fall of a future civilization and the creation of an organization that can influence that fall.

The production team on Foundation has been quiet about what exactly will be included in the 10 episodes of the first season, and trailers only hint at concepts, characters, and events drawn from the novels. What sure is that it will be ambitious in both scope and execution, with many production companies keen to bring large-scale sci-fi and fantasy productions to eager viewers – think Amazon’s billion-dollar The Lord of the Rings series, or Denis Villeneuve’s Dune.

The Foundation series on Apple TV+ will arrive on the streaming platform soon, hopefully stunning viewers with a riveting story, exciting visuals, and compelling acting. Here are all the details about Apple TV+’s upcoming Foundation TV series, one of the most anticipated new TV shows in 2021.

Foundation Story

Foundation News & Updates Everything We Know

The Foundation Apple TV+ show will be based on the world created and explored in Isaac Asimov’s seven classic sci-fi novels – the original and namesake, plus two sequels and two prequels. The story in those volumes is expansive, stretching over thousands of years, so it’s unlikely that the Apple TV+ show will cover them all in a single season. The official synopsis for the show reads:

“Based on the award-winning novels by Isaac Asimov, Foundation chronicles a band of exiles on their monumental journey to save humanity and rebuild civilization amid the fall of the Galactic Empire.”

The novels are hard sci-fi, which takes serious science into account unlike franchises like Star Wars, and are literary in their execution – there’s not so much action as conversation and philosophy. Given the above synopsis, it’s likely the series will be inspired by the original novels and forge a slightly different kind of story.

Foundation Cast

Foundation News & Updates Everything We Know

Foundation on Apple TV+ will feature a large cast, though many roles are yet to be announced. Leading the cast are Lee Pace (Guardians of the Galaxy, The Hobbit series) and Jared Harris (Chernobyl). Pace plays Brother Day, Emperor of the Galaxy, and Harris plays Hari Seldon, who in the books is a professor of mathematics who develops psychohistory, a method for predicting the future. Lou Llobell (Voyagers) plays Gaal Dornick, who is a young mathematics professor and Seldon’s biographer in the book series (gender-swapped to be female in the TV series), and Alfred Enoch (the Harry Potter movies) is Raych Seldon, the son of Hari Seldon. The so-far-announced cast is rounded with Leah Harvey as Salvor Hardin, mayor of Terminus City, Laura Birn as Eto Demerzel, Cassian Bilton as Brother Dawn, and Terrence Mann as Brother Dusk. While many of these characters are based on those of the book, it’s likely the series will make changes to their roles and stories.

The Foundation series is being created by Skydance Studios, who previously created Altered Carbon for Netflix, and produced and written by David S. Goyer (screenwriter for the Blade, and Dark Knight trilogies). In interviews, Goyer has said that this opportunity with Apple works for the sci-fi epic because, “We can tell the story hopefully over the course of 80 episodes, 80 hours, as opposed to trying to condense it all into two or three hours for a single film.” Isaac Asimov’s daughter, Robyn Asimov, is also serving as an executive producer on the Foundation Apple TV+ series.
