IT 1990 vs 2017 Which Stephen King Movie Had The Better Losers Club

IT 1990, IT 2017, and IT Chapter Two all contained versions of Stephen King’s iconic group The Losers’ Club, but which version was the best? While Pennywise the Dancing Clown understandably gets most of the attention when it comes to the characters in IT, the real beating heart of King’s book is the Losers’ Club, a septet of social outcasts brought together by their shared quest not to get eaten by Derry’s resident monster. Over time, they gain the courage to take the fight to IT instead of running and hiding.

Minus a certain uncomfortable scene in the book that’s been discussed ad nauseam, The Losers’ Club is almost the ideal group of childhood friends, caring deeply about each other’s well-being, and willing to put their lives on the line to protect their makeshift collective. Most people wish they had that level of connection with their friends, especially once the characters reunite as adults after years of separation. The Losers’ Club were destined to find each other.

IT’s 1990 miniseries and more recent movie adaptations both have their defenders, those who claim one version is clearly better than the other. Tim Curry and Bill Skarsgard’s Pennywise performances in particular are often directly compared. A less examined topic is which adaptation of IT boasts the better Losers’ Club, and we’re about to do just that, looking at each character, and then the whole lot.

Bill Denborough

Future superstar author Bill Denborough serves as the leader of the Losers’ Club as both kids and adults, spurred on by IT brutally killing his little brother Georgie. When it comes to ranking the four Bills onscreen, it’s hard to vote against the late Jonathan Brandis, kid Bill in the 1990 miniseries. He’s terrific, and perfectly gets across Bill’s mixture of guilt and sadness. In second place is Jaeden Martell, kid Bill in 2017, who comes very close to matching Brandis. James McAvoy is quite good as adult Bill in Chapter Two, but Richard Thomas, adult Bill in 1990, is the clear weakest link. He’s fine, but not impressive. The duo in 2017 and 2019 are stronger overall.

Beverly Marsh

Beverly Marsh, the sole female member of the Losers’ Club, ends up a love interest to both Bill and Ben. She’s a tragic character, bullied at school and abused by her father. Future Ginger Snaps star Emily Perkins does very well as kid Bev in 1990, but she’s ultimately edged out for best Bev by Sophia Lillis in 2017. It’s a close race though. As for the adults, Jessica Chastain does slightly better than Annette O’Toole, but part of that is on the 1990 script, which has O’Toole saying some cringe-worthy dialogue. It’s a dead heat, but the 2017 and 2019 duo wins out again.

Ben Hanscom

Ben is the “fat” kid of the group, but also often its emotional core. He grows up to be a rich architect, but never stops pining for Beverly until they’re finally together. The late John Ritter was a huge fan of both Stephen King and the IT book, and it shows, with the fan-favorite former sitcom star giving his all as adult Ben in 1990. In second is Jeremy Ray Taylor, who makes kid Ben utterly lovable and empathetic in 2017, especially for those who grew up overweight. Brandon Crane also makes Ben quite likable and easy to root for in the miniseries. Jay Ryan is the weakest Ben, doing fine in Chapter Two, but failing to make much of an impression. 1990’s duo is the strongest.

Richie Tozier

Richie, the Losers’ Club’s resident comedian, is quick with a joke, but still always there for his friends when it counts. IT Chapter Two added an interesting new wrinkle, revealing that Richie was gay and in love with Eddie. Saturday Night Live vet Bill Hader absolutely killed it as adult Richie, and really deserved some awards for his work. Stranger Things’ Finn Wolfhard also knocked it out of the park as kid Richie in 2017. Richie is the most lop-sided contest here, as while Seth Green and Harry Anderson both do well in the miniseries, Hader and Wolfhard are formidable.

Eddie Kaspbrak

Eddie is a complex character, having become a hypochondriac due to his mother’s insistence that he’s ill, but regularly forced into bravery that scares him to death. The clear standout among the screen Eddies is Jack Dylan Grazer in 2017, who gets some hilariously funny material to work with, and also sells fear brilliantly. James Ransone as adult Eddie is almost as good in Chapter Two. Unfortunately Adam Faraizl and Dennis Christopher just weren’t given as much to chew on in the miniseries, sort of losing this battle by default.

Mike Hanlon

Mike Hanlon, the only member of color in the Losers’ Club and also the one who stays behind to “guard the lighthouse” after IT’s seeming first defeat, is sadly a bit underutilized in both adaptations. Of the four performances, Chosen Jacobs is the best as young Mike in 2017, making the character both likable and empathetic, despite the odd decision to take away his position as Derry’s resident historian. Of the adult Mikes, former Old Spice pitchman Isaiah Mustafa does quite well in Chapter Two, narrowly besting a game Tim Reid in 1990. Marlon Taylor did fine as kid Mike in 1990, but came off a bit flat. 2017 and 2019 narrowly wins.

Stan Uris

Stan Uris is probably best known for being the only member of the Losers’ Club to die before they all return to Derry to fight IT, after his returned memories drive him to suicide. Or he calmly decides to commit it, thanks to a regrettable twist in IT Chapter Two. Either way, he’s the Loser with the least to do in both adaptations. Wyatt Olef as young Stan in 2017 is the standout, with Richard Masur as adult Stan in 1990 deserving praise due to his hilarious performance as Stan’s disembodied head in a fridge. Ben Heller does fine as kid Stan in 1990, as does Andy Bean as adult Stan in Chapter Two, but neither is too remarkable. 1990 gets the duke, but just barely.

Which IT Has The Better Losers’ Club?

Based on the results above, it’s clear to see that the Losers’ Club casts of IT 2017 and IT Chapter Two are the better of the two adaptations. The miniseries only won for Best Bens and Best Stans, with the movies winning with every other character. Either way, both adaptations remain well worth watching again.
