Glee The 10 Best Duets Ranked

Over the course of six seasons and 121 episodes, the Glee cast released a total of 6 compilation albums, 16 soundtrack albums, 19 EPs, and a whopping 460 singles. In the early days, mainly seasons 1, 2, and 3, their songs would often chart in the Billboard Hot 100, even beating Elvis’ record for the most Hot 100 entries.

In the vastness of Glee’s music catalog, there are more than a few memorable duets. Sung by different pairings of the show’s undeniably talented cast, these songs were fresh, distinctive, and just plain enjoyable. Whether they’re love ballads, sassy numbers, or even singing duels, they earned their spot among the greatest musical triumphs in the show.

10 The Boy Is Mine

Two of the most powerful voices in Glee came together for the first time in the season one episode “Laryngitis” and the show was never the same again. Singing about each of their claims for Noah Puckerman’s heart, Mercedes and Santana performed this classic ’90s song, first recorded by Monica and Brandy.

With sass to spare and an overflow of intensity, this song was an explosion of talent and bravado. It was also the first indication that Santana and Mercedes’ voices went amazing together, something the show would exploit later on.

9 Next To Me

Rachel’s mom, Shelby Corcoran, played by Broadway icon Idina Menzel, occasionally appeared on Glee to provide her with extra confidence, especially at a time of need. The last time she stopped by the show was in the season 4 episode, “Sweet Dreams.”

As Rachel prepares to audition for the role of Fanny Brice in the revival of Funny Girl, Shelby advises her not to sing something from the musical and instead chose something different. The two then duet to Emeli Sandé’s 2012 hit, their voices perfectly harmonizing to the soulful tune. When it came to talent, these two had it to spare, and this duet is the perfect example of just how talented the Corcoran genes were.

8 Lucky

These cheeky, absurdly romantic song was first performed in season 2’s “Duets,” – one of the best episodes in Glee history. Sung by Quinn and Sam, it captures not only the magic of the original but also the nature of the character’s budding relationship and undeniable chemistry.

Diana Agron’s soft tone goes incredibly with the song, as does Chord Overstreet’s boy band voice and looks. The performance is playful, tender, and surprisingly intimate, signaling a bright future for these two. And while their relationship eventually crashed and burned, “Lucky” survives as the ultimate Fabrevans number.

7 Holding Out For A Hero

Glee The 10 Best Duets Ranked

The season 4 newbies have an overall bad reputation, and it’s not really their fault. They were never given any real room to develop, which ultimately made them seem like poor imitations of the original cast of characters. However, there were moments where they certainly shone, and the episode, “Dynamic Duets,” had several of them.

Dressed as two very obvious spoofs of Wonder Woman and Catwoman respectively, Marley and Kitty absolutely kill their rendition of Bonnie Tyler’s “Holding Out For A Hero.” Energetic, contagious and just a tad over-the-top, they give the Fairy Godmother a run for her money with this exhilarating number.

6 Alone

The ridiculously charming and talented Kristin Chenoweth had one of the most memorable guest stints on Glee. She played April Rhodes, a gifted high school dropout who is briefly part of the New Directions after Rachel leaves the club. April returns in seasons 2 and 5, bringing her own brand of zany humor.

During her first appearance in season 1, she, along with Will Schuester, gives an incredible rendition of the classic ’80s torch ballad, “Alone.” Her soaring voice towers over the lyrics, and Matthew Morrison is more than able to keep up. For a song that has had so many memorable renditions, including Heart’s original, this cover is a worthy addition to the list.

5 I Feel Pretty/Unpretty

At first, the idea of pairing Quinn and Rachel for a duet would seem like comparing a lion’s roar with that of a cub’s. However, beyond any expectation, the end result proved to be one of the most memorable and honest performances the show ever did. And the idea of mashing-up the classic West Side Story showtune with TLC’s “Unpretty” was a literal stroke of genius.

During the “Born This Way” episode, as Rachel contemplates getting a nose job, she asks Quinn to accompany her to the surgeon. They both sing about their own insecurities and fears, finally finding common ground between them and further developing what was one of the most interesting and complex, albeit mostly unexplored, relationships in the show. Rachel doesn’t overdo it and Quinn doesn’t bite more than she can chew, allowing their voices to not only harmonize but actually complement each other. More duets between these two would’ve been amazing.

4 Smooth Criminal

Naya Rivera’s attitude could have sold any and every song that came along her way. But with this Michael Jackson classic, she literally took it to the next level. And Grant Gustin smartly allows her to take not only the high notes but the actual spotlight. 2CELLOS’ intervention gives the song yet one more fresh twist, and the result is a completely original and worthy adaptation of a timeless classic.

Stirring, tense, and instantly memorable, it’s enhanced further by its simple yet effective staging. Sung during the Michael Jackson tribute in season 3, “Smooth Criminal” is not only the highlight of the episode, it might as well be the best duet of the season and the show.

3 Baby, It’s Cold Outside

Glee The 10 Best Duets Ranked

Sung by Kurt and Blaine in “A Very Glee Christmas,” before they were an actual couple, this number had everything that made Glee so addictive in the first place. It had plenty of charm, a pair of absurdly good-looking and talented performers, and chemistry so electrifying, it practically came out of the screen.

The song’s lyrics are definitely problematic, but the show focuses more on the growing relationship between these two characters, ultimately delivering a sweet and fittingly cheerful duet, ideal for the holiday season.

2 River Deep, Mountain High

After their first duet together proved such a smashing success, it was only natural that Mercedes and Santana would keep singing together. During the “Duets” episode, they team up, knowing they would be invincible together. Taking on this 1966 hit from Ike & Tina Turner, the two teenaged divas reach new levels of perfection, delivering a cover that threatens to overwhelm because of the sheer potency of their voices.

As much a vocal dance as it is a battle, these two take equal times to shine. They both hold on to the song’s steering wheel firmly, sharing the spotlight and boosting each other, to the ultimate benefit of the performance. The loud, vigorous orchestration only enhances the entire things, delivering a spectacular song-and-dance number that should have easily won them the episode’s competition.

1 Faithfully

The best duet that Finn and Rachel sang, this Journey ballad got the Glee treatment during the first season’s finale, “Journey.” Sung as the opening number for New Directions’ set at Regionals, it features the lovestruck teenagers making their way from the back of the auditorium, all the way to the stage. Eyes on each other the entire time, their undeniable bond and sparkling chemistry go hand-in-hand with the song’s lyrics.

Starting soft and controlled, the song eventually builds up to a rousing finale, where Rachel’s thunderous belt takes center stage. She juggles a collection of notes with such ease, she makes it seem like she could do it in her sleep. By the time the music ends, the audience is not only convinced that Finn and Rachel belong together, they also know that the New Directions are going places. Jesse’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” might have won Regionals, but “Faithfully” won the audience’s hearts.
