Glimpse Agent Locke in ‘Halo: Nightfall’ Before Playing As Him in ‘Halo 5’

The vaguely detailed Agent Locke will be playable in ‘Halo 5: Guardians’ on Xbox One, but fans can get a sneak peek at his origins in the debut trailer for ‘Halo: Nightfall’.

It’s always the slightest teases that can get the most diehard fans uppity about longstanding franchises, and the casual reveal of Halo’s mysterious Agent Locke has been a focal point in the eyes of fans thus far. Just what role the Spartan has to play in the overall arch of the story (not to mention the curiosity induced by his relationship with The Arbiter during the events of Halo: The Master Chief Collection) is still up in the air, much to the chagrin of fans. Furthermore, will Jameson Locke help or hinder Master Chief?

Microsoft and 343 Industries are taking their time answering all of these questions, but today fans learned a little bit more about the character. During a Halo panel at Comic-Con 2014, 343 revealed more details about the Ridley Scott-executively produced Halo: Nightfall series that’ll be arriving later this year — releasing the first ever trailer for the project in the process.

Starring the aforementioned Agent Locke, the new series is said to be an origin story for the unknown soldier as he sets off alongside several squad mates to shutdown a mining operation. This isn’t just any standard excavation site, however, as the element being unearthed is said to kill humans. Yikes! But 343 had yet another curveball for longtime fans: the mission takes place on a fragment of the Halo Ring that Master Chief destroyed at the end of Halo: Combat Evolved.

Those that could care less about getting updates on the Halo television special (shame on them) also received interesting news pertaining to the hotly anticipated Halo 5: Guardians for Xbox One. It was announced that Mike Colter (The Good Wife, The Following, Zero Dark Thirty) will be reprising his role as Jameson Locke in the upcoming video game. Colter will suit up for motion capture and lend his pipes to the Spartan during Master Chief’s next adventure, and it will all culminate in Agent Locke making his playable debut in Guardians.

There’s still so much that hasn’t been answered by 343 Industries and apparently it won’t be for quite some time still. During the panel, Halo’s franchise development director, Frank O’Connor, announced that Agent Locke’s motives and allegiance will all be made clear at Comic-Con 2015 — in the exact same room, no less. If that is indeed the case, then Microsoft certainly has all its ducks in a row.

What did you think of the Halo: Nightfall debut trailer? Are you excited to suit up as Agent Locke in Halo 5: Guardians?
