Godzilla 2s Orca Explained How Humanity Wakes The Titans

In Godzilla: King of the Monsters, humanity has found a way to communicate with the Titans using a device called the Orca – and it can also be used to awaken them. Invented by Vera Farmiga’s character, Dr. Emma Russell, and her ex-husband, Mark Russell (Kyle Chandler), the Orca is initially being used with the benevolent Titan Mothra, but it’s then stolen by a group of eco-terrorists led by Charles Dance’s character, Jonah Alan.

In the HBO preview for Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Alan laid out his terrifying plans for the Orca. Explaining that human nature “always gets worse,” he says that the world really belongs to the Titans and he plans to give it back to them, by waking them up with the Orca and allowing them to wreak havoc upon humanity. Standing in their way is Monarch, the secret organization dedicated to studying the Titans that appeared in Godzilla and Kong: Skull Island, and whose best hope for saving the human race from the Titans is another Titan: Godzilla.

What we know about the Orca so far comes from set visit reports, which revealed that Mothra is the first of the Titans to escape. When Alan steals the Orca he also kidnaps Dr. Emma Russell and her daughter, Madison (Millie Bobby Brown) along with it, since Dr. Russell is one of the only people who knows how to operate the Orca. Alan plans to force her to use it to awaken some of the most dangerous Titans, like the three-headed Ghidorah and the fiery Rodan. In an effort to stop him, Monarch finds Mark Russell, who is capable of tracking the Orca and wants to find his daughter, but split from his wife due to a disagreement over the titans (Mark wanted to destroy them, while Emma wants to protect them).

The Orca’s name is actually an Easter egg, since The Orca was the boat used to battle the giant shark in Jaws. It seems as though the Orca in Godzilla: King of the Monsters has some measure of ability to control the Titans, and the name implies that it may communicate with them using sound waves (similar to whale vocalizations). It’s likely that it was created by studying footage of the events from the first Godzilla, in which the two MUTO Titans communicated with one another through strange, trilling roars. Godzilla himself is also a useful subject to study, and the Monarch Sciences website has shown the organization tracking Godzilla as he swims all around the world.

Both Emma and Madison Russell have been shown in the trailers to have a strong connection to the Titans, with Emma reaching out to touch Mothra in one scene, and Madison expressing concern for Godzilla. The movie is clearly setting up a battle between the “good” and “bad” Titans, but based on what we’ve seen in the trailers, an awful lot of people are going to die no matter who wins. They really should have let sleeping Titans lie.
