Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard confirms that Mechagodzilla will be in the upcoming movie. The fourth installment in Legendary and Warner Bros.’ MonsterVerse, will see the highly-anticipated epic showdown between Godzilla and Kong. Directed by Adam Wingard, the film also has Millie Bobby Brown and Kyle Chandler reprising their roles from Godzilla: King of the Monsters, along with a cast including Alexander SkarsgĂ„rd, Rebecca Hall, and Brian Tyree Henry. The movie is one of Warner Bros.’ 2021 movies that will release both in theaters and on HBO Max on March 31 as part of the studio’s latest release plan.

Set about five years after the events of 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Godzilla vs. Kong finds Godzilla acting a bit erratically, attacking cities for seemingly no reason. This leads the organization Monarch on a mission into the Hollow Earth through Skull Island to lure the monsters back beneath the surface. Godzilla vs Kong’s first trailer debuted in late January and showed off the first big-screen battle between Kong and Godzilla since the 1962 crossover movie King Kong vs. Godzilla. However, unlike that film, Godzilla vs. Kong is expected to have a definitive winner between the two creatures. The trailers make it clear that Kong is the hero needed to protect humanity against the destructive Godzill, but as more footage has been released, it seems Godzilla could have the upper hand in the fight, with Kong appearing as the underdog. The latest trailer, however, may have hinted at another foe Godzilla and Kong will need to take on together – Mechagodzilla. It’s been speculated the iconic nemesis of Godzilla will also feature in the upcoming MonsterVerse movie, with some merchandise seemingly confirming it. Now, Wingard is giving his own spoiler.

On Instagram, Wingard showed off some Godzilla vs. Kong toys ahead of the movie’s debut and purposefully used the post to confirm the addition of Mechagodzilla. In the photo, Wingard holds up a toy, labeled Giant Mechagodzilla. “The cat’s out of the bag!” Wingard’s caption reads. View the Instagram post below:

Since his first appearance in 1974’s Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, Mechagodzilla has appeared in a number of Godzilla films, TV shows and video games, in which he has been given different sizes, designs and origins. Up there with popular foes like Mothra and Rodan, Mechagodzilla is a popular character among Godzilla fans, who have even theorizing his inclusion in the film since the debut of the first trailer. His design in this movie was first hinted with its recent Funko Pop toy, which showed the monster with robotic claw hands and a red mouth laser beam.

Now that Mechagodzilla’s appearance in Godzilla vs. Kong has been confirmed, there’s even more reason to be eager for the upcoming MonserVerse movie to finally release. Based on the latest toys, MonserVerse’s Mechagodzilla is a bit different than past looks, and it’s still unclear what exactly his role will be in the new film. With the movie potentially exploring more of Godzilla’s backstory, it will be interesting to see how Mechagodzilla will play into the movie’s plot.
