At this point, Godzilla has faced off against more giant monster foes than he has been solo. From Ghidorah to Destoroyah, Godzilla has battled plenty of kaiju (both famous and obscure). But what about Kong? Sure, he’s known for climbing famous skyscrapers but he too has faced many monsters.

Starting with the 1930s all the way to 2021, there have been many movies based on King Kong. In each one, filmmakers gave him new and fascinating monsters for, both him and the humans to fight. Whether they are from Skull Island or not, each fight was unique and left an impact: good or bad.

9 Mechani-Kong

When Toho got the rights to make a King Kong movie with Universal, it resulted in King Kong VS Godzilla. After that, Toho used Kong for another adventure called King Kong Escapes in which King Kong fights several monsters, including a robot clone known as Mechani-Kong.

Unlike Mechagodzilla, who is just as famous as King Ghidorah, Mechani-Kong is a subpar foe. While the concept is quite fitting for Toho, many fans will agree that nothing much is done with this character. The two barely fight and it’s not even Kong that defeats it: a human character does.

8 Gorosaurus

Also from King Kong Escapes, Gorosaurus is a kaiju that is meant to be Toho’s version of the T-Rex Kong had fought from the original King Kong. While nowhere near those levels, the fight with Gorosaurus provides some engaging entertainment. Kong even breaks the jaw, continuing the iconic fatality.

Gorosaurus has some ridiculous moves too, such as hopping and kicking like a kangaroo. This monster would actually return in Toho’s Destroy All Monsters.

7 The Giant Boa

The 1976 remake of King Kong was divisive amongst longtime fans for many reasons. One of them was that it toned down the monster action immensely. There were no fights with dinosaurs or kaiju but instead, there was a battle with a giant boa constrictor.

The boa actually ends up being a nice touch since it breaks up what was a rather dull middle act. Even if the fight is less than stellar, the snake itself is well-crafted and given a surprisingly gory jawbreaker death by Kong.

6 Captain Preston Packard

In 2017’s Kong: Skull Island, Kong takes out helicopters with ease, thus killing a lot of soldiers. This sets their leader, Preston Packard, on a revenge mission to kill the king of the island. Typically, the human characters in these movies are just trying to survive or capture him so it was an interesting change to make a human rival.

Packard is played by Samuel L. Jackson, giving that stone-cold evil look rather well. His tactics almost see him defeat the young Kong as he uses his weapons and explosives to nearly kill him. However, Kong is soon saved by Tom Hiddleston’s Conrad, who gives Kong long enough to recuperate to kill Packard by crushing him with his fist.

5 The Tyrannosaurus Rex

In the most famous battle of the 1933 original, King Kong faced the T-Rex for the first time. By 2021 standards, the stop-motion is very noticeable and it’s not a very long fight. However, this fight and the T-Rex itself are still well-crafted and the revolutionary special effects paved way for how visual effects evolved.

However, for a movie produced in 1933, the T-Rex is an iconic foe that still looks great in many ways. It led to Kong establishing his iconic finishing move: the jawbreaker. A move that would continue for decades, including a fakeout version in Kong: Skull Island.

4 The Military

It was said that beauty killed the beast but it was the airplanes that also played a big part. In the 1933, 1976, and 2005 versions, Kong meets his end at the top of the giant skyscrapers. The military sends airplanes (or helicopters for the 1976 remake), stocked with turrets to take on the Eighth Wonder Of The World.

A tragic end for an animal that did not deserve death. So in all three versions, the military act as villains that cause some of the most iconic deaths in film history.

3 Skullcrawlers

Jordan Vogt-Roberts wanted to take Kong: Skull Island in a completely different direction. He did just that, especially with the many monsters that roam the island, including Kong’s greatest rivals, known as Skullcrawlers.

They live beneath the surface and are unearthed accidentally by Monarch. They also happen to be the creatures that killed Kong’s parents. Like all things in Kong: Skull Island, their design and execution is nothing short of astonishing. They made for some unique villains and deserved a death more creative.

2 Godzilla

Of course, Godzilla had to be included. Their match-up is as iconic as Batman versus Superman, but on a much larger scale. Not only did they fight in 1962 but, in 2021, Kong faced off with Godzilla yet again.

Not much is needed to be said about Godzilla at this point. He’s not only a perfect allegory for humanity’s destructive means but he is an awesome protector of Earth. Whether he’s with or against humans, he’s always there to protect the Earth from the likes of Ghidorah. And his fights with Kong are simply events that will never be forgotten.

1 The Vastatosaurus Rex

Though Godzilla is a very close second, it’s hard to top the battle with the Vastatosaurus Rex. These evolved Rexes are pretty much the only villains who are close to bringing harm to Kong. They are massive, ferocious, and attack in a pack, which makes them even more of a hassle for Kong.

These Rexes also seem to have more intelligence than most movies would portray. They use stealth, tactical maneuvers, manage to solve problems, and are relentless until they get their prey. This makes their fight with Kong tension-filled and makes for one of the best scenes in Peter Jackson’s King Kong. Of course, the jawbreaker returned in probably its best form.
