Golden Globes 2022 Nominations

The nominations for the 79th Golden Globe Awards have been announced. The awards show, which celebrates achievement in both film and television, is traditionally the first big program in the yearly awards season. Although the winners themselves do not always accurately reflect who will win the Oscar (especially considering the Globes have a category for Comedy and Musical films, which the Academy awards tend to ignore), the nominees typically reflect the films that will be seen repeatedly throughout award season and feature heavily at the Oscars.

The Golden Globes are awarded by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, a group that has recently come under fire for questionable business practices and a lack of diversity in their voting body. Multiple studios, including Netflix, Amazon, and WarnerMedia announced a boycott of the Golden Globes, and NBC refused to air the 2022 program, as was previously arranged. In response to this blowback, the HFPA added 21 new members to its voting body to increase diversity, and they currently plan on holding the Golden Globes ceremony on January 9, 2022, whether or not it is televised.

This morning at 6:00 AM PST, the nominees for the Golden Globes were announced by the HFPA on a peculiar live stream hosted by president Helen Hoehne, who opened with a speech about the organization’s structural changes throughout the year, with special guest Snoop Dogg. This year featured a truncated slate of potential film nominees, as most movies didn’t start returning to theaters until May 2021 or later following pandemic shutdowns. However, the release of new 2021 films alongside a wide variety of delayed 2020 films has provided a robust slate of projects competing for awards attention in the last few months, many of which have been nominated today. Check out the full list of nominations below, updated as they’re announced:

In the film arena, the usual suspects are present, with a few notable exceptions. Ridley Scott’s The Last Duel got no nominations at all, and prominent frontrunners from awards-bait directors including Wes Anderson’s The French Dispatch, Joel Coen’s The Tragedy of Macbeth, and Ridley Scott’s House of Gucci only got one nomination apiece. Jane Campion’s literary adaptation The Power of the Dog and Kenneth Branagh’s semi-autobiographical Belfast led the nominations at 7 apiece, with Don’t Look Up, King Richard, Licorice Pizza, and West Side Story all trailing at 4.

For television, many of the same series that brought home Emmys this year were nominated, including Ted Lasso (4 nominations), Hacks (3 nominations), and Mare of Easttown (2 nominations). However, the pack is being led by returning 2021 series Succession with 7 nominations, and the new series Squid Game and Only Murders in the Building are also having strong showings with 3 apiece. While it is still unclear if the awards ceremony will be broadcast in any way, if any of these new shows take home major gold, this good be a good sign for their prospects at the next Emmys as well.
