Author and co-showrunner Neil Gaiman has confirmed filming has begun on the second season of Good Omens. Season 2 of the Amazon Prime series, based on the 1990 novel, was confirmed by Gaiman in June 2021. Gaiman is returning to write and co-showrun, with Michael Sheen and David Tennant set to reprise their roles as Aziraphale and Crowley respectively.

Good Omens is adapted from the novel written by both Gaiman and Terry Pratchett that was released in 1990, following the efforts of angel Aziraphale and demon Crowley as they attempt to avert the imminent apocalypse. After years of development hell over movie and TV adaptations, and the passing of Pratchett, Amazon co-produced the adaptation with BBC Studios, releasing the series on Amazon Prime video in 2019. Fans had kept a close eye on production since its announcement, with Sheen teasing the production’s start date on Twitter by dying his hair to match his character’s.

Now, Gaiman himself has confirmed production has begun on the surprising and much-anticipated season 2. Posting to his personal Twitter, Gaiman shared a quick glimpse at the studios where the second season will be filming in Scotland. The image features the entrance to the studio, with the quote “Get thee behind me, foul fiend…After You.” painted on the door in black, referring to an exchange between Aziraphale and Crowley in the first episode of the series, “In The Beginning..” Gaiman stated he didn’t know who was responsible for it, but he loved how the quote was waiting for him when he left the studio on the first day of shooting, confirming further production had begun. I do not know who painted this quote from Good Omens Season 1 on the studio exit door. I do not want to know. I just love that as I left today after our first day of shooting this was waiting, to welcome us back to the outside world. pic.twitter.com/LazjyaQzdi

A second season of Good Omens was initially believed to be unlikely before its surprise renewal in June 2021, with the first season already covering much of the original novel’s story. In an entry on his online journal, Gaiman revealed he and Pratchett had previously plotted out ideas for a sequel in 1989 when they were unable to sleep due to being jet-lagged when heading to a convention in Seattle, which was later incorporated into the television series. Gaiman had previously been asked on Tumblr whether a sequel would ever be made, with the author stating it depended on a number of factors.

Good Omens season 2 took much of the series’ and novels’ dedicated fandom by total surprise, as many waited with anticipation for any more possible news. Gaiman is active on social media, regularly interacting with fans across Twitter and Tumblr, meaning that many are hopeful to catch any glimpse of where Aziraphale and Crowley’s story will go next. With the story only being known by Gaiman, the cast, and crew, viewers speculate on how the angel and demon’s relationship will develop further, and what will come next, now that the apocalypse has been rescheduled.
