Google Lets iPhone Users Delete Search History With Just Two Taps

Google is introducing a new privacy-centric feature that will allow users to quickly delete the last 15 minutes of their search activity. The search giant already allows users to set an auto-delete schedule for wiping their web and app activity, which includes everything from web search history as well as activity across Google’s suite of services such as Maps and Google Play to name a few.

Currently, the eponymous search app allows users to choose between an automatic activity deletion interval of 3, 18, and 36 months. However, the app also offers an option to delete the activity data manually whenever they want. As far as specifically deleting search history goes, users can either go with deleting the entire log or erase history in a custom time span or a particular day. Of course, users can also choose to delete only a particular set of activity data from the search history.

The latest addition to Google Search’s privacy-minded features is the ability to delete Search history accumulated within the last 15 minutes. The new feature is now live in the Google Search app for iOS, but Google has promised to bring it over to the Android app as well. However. Google has not provided a specific window as to when that will happen, save for a vague ‘later this year’ promise.

How To Erase Search History For The Past 15 Minutes?

In order to access the new search activity deletion tool, users simply have to open the Google app and tap on the ‘More’ icon that appears on the bottom-left corner of the screen. On the ‘More’ page, users will now see a new ‘Delete last 15 min’ option below the Search history tab. However, users will have to specify the Google account whose associated search history they want to erase. This is applicable only for devices on which multiple Google accounts have been signed in. To change the Google account, users simply have to select the right one from the drop-down menu at the top of the ‘More’ window.

Google is also introducing another tool that adds a layer of authentication before accessing the My Activity dashboard. When enabled, users will be asked to verify their identity using their Google Account credentials. This feature will come in handy in scenarios where users have to share their phone, tablet or PC with another individual. However, Google warns that the added layer of verification will only apply to the My Activity dashboard. What this means is the search history and activity log across other Google apps and services will still be accessible by others. This added layer of authentication for protecting the My Activity log behind a layer of password can be accessed from the Search history section in the Google app. Google argues that it uses the activity log to surface curated content, which includes ads as well.
