Google Pixel 5 Leaked Renders Highlight The Fingerprint Sensors Return

As often happens with an expected next-generation phone, leaks begin to appear at increasing frequency and this is true of Google’s Pixel 5. Not only was this device ‘leaked’ by Google itself recently, but now new renders have appeared online that reveal a bit more information on what can be expected with Google’s next premium Pixel smartphone.

Google’s Pixel line was recently in the news, thanks to the launch of the Pixel 4a, a lower cost version of the flagship Pixel 4 that was released in 2019. The budget priced Pixel phones started with the Pixel 3a, and naturally proved popular at a lower cost. The Pixel 4a is too new to know whether it will enjoy the same level of enthusiasm, although initial impressions are positive. While there have been rave reviews for Google phones since the first generation Pixel, they have tended to not sell as well as the Apple iPhone or Samsung Galaxy phones.

The latest leaked images come courtesy of @OnLeaks and PriceBaba. One of the unexpected revelations that have come from the images is the inclusion of a fingerprint sensor on the back. Some may see this as a step backward, since the Pixel 4 removed the physical fingerprint identification sensor, shifting to facial identification instead. This matched the Face ID feature found on Apple’s iPhone, and was lauded as a faster and smarter way to unlock the phone. Whether this indicates that Google will aim for a lower price with the new phone remains to be seen, but it’s a possibility. Given the current need to often wear face masks, a fingerprint scanner may be a nice convenience feature. After all, Apple had to rush out an update to Face ID in order to allow easier unlocking of an iPhone, following the start of the global pandemic.

What Else Is ‘Known’ About The Pixel 5?

It is already clear from Google’s own blog that the Pixel 5 will have 5G capability. Other previous leaks have suggested that the phone may include a less powerful processor, possibly the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765, instead of the more powerful 865 (or 865+) that is commonly used by competing flagship phones. Again, this may indicate a lower price point or a shift in focus. Google has included custom hardware, called the Neural Core or TPU, in the Pixel to aid AI, with particular attention to photo processing. As the custom chip begins to take over more functions that supercharge the CPU, a lesser spec processor may still offer top tier performance. Thus far, no Pixel has ever seemed to lag, too much.

The Pixel 5 is becoming more interesting as leaks emerge and especially as they do not seem to definitively declare the direction Google is moving toward. Will Google be able to add enough value via its Neural Core and AI expertise to remove the need for the latest CPU? If so, this may signal a new phase of AI-first hardware. It’s all speculation until the launch date, which is promised to be soon, according to Google.
