Google & Samsung Improve Assistant Nest & SmartThings Compatibility

Google and Samsung are both major names in the smart home industry in their own right, and have now announced intriguing new compatibility between their respective products and services. Previously, controlling certain aspects of Google’s Nest devices could only be done through the Google Home app. With this new partnership, however, Google’s smart devices and Samsung’s smart tech will integrate like never before.

Google’s Nest brand covers most of the company’s smart home products, ranging from smart speakers to thermostats and cameras. Samsung SmartThings, meanwhile, centers around a SmartThings hub and app that allows users to control smart home devices all from one central location. Compatibility is key, however, and Samsung and Google have not worked seamlessly together until now.

The two companies recently announced their new partnership and greater support which will bring Google’s Nest products into Samsung SmartThings as compatible devices for control and monitoring. The new combination will let users do things like set the temperature on their Nest thermostat remotely, or check in on their Nest camera feeds from the SmartThings app. Additionally, the companies explained that more Samsung smart home appliances will be equipped with Google Assistant, making it possible to do things like ask Google to preheat the oven or start the dishwasher.

How Google & Samsung Are Making Smart Homes Smarter

The early stages of smart home technology have been exciting, if a little frustrating. It seems like every brand of smart home product, from Wyze cameras to Ecobee thermostats, is operated by its own app. As folks built up their smart homes, many have found themselves needing to toggle between several apps to control different devices within a single ecosystem. While not the complete answer, Google and Samsung’s partnership is an important move towards erasing those multi-app headaches. SmartThings is already an established and prominent control hub – Amazon and its family of Alexa devices also do this quite well – with a large catalog of supported devices. By bringing Google’s Nest devices into the fray, Samsung is making additional popular smart home products available and easy to control from a single app, alongside other items in the home, like smart lights and switches.

The fact Samsung will offer linking with Google Assistant from multiple Samsung apps, and the incoming implementation of easier smart home control via Samsung’s Galaxy smartphones, it’s clear the two brands are taking the steps necessary to continue making smart homes easier to use and accessible to more users. While this kind of cross-brand compatibility would have been nice to have from the start, it’s better late than never, and that can only mean good things for Samsung and Google smart home enthusiasts.
