Googles LongRumored Pixel Watch Could Arrive As Early As 2022

A Pixel Watch by Google might not be the stuff of tech mythology considering it is now reportedly slated for a 2022 debut. Alleged renders of the Pixel Watch surfaced online earlier this year, revealing a device with an extremely clean and minimalist design. The case is round and metallic, while the glass appears to slope dramatically alongside its periphery. The design is somewhat reminiscent of the Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2. There is hardly any hint of a bezel, but it is quite likely that some form of capacitive bezel control for navigating the UI might be in place.

The previous renders almost suggest Google took the Apple Watch and hammered it into a circular profile. When they first surfaced online, they were accompanied by rumors claiming that Wear OS will be “getting a facelift” for the Pixel Watch. There was also chatter about new watch faces and a redesigned UI, most of which actually came to fruition earlier this year. Google merged Wear OS and Samsung’s Tizen OS to create a unified experience that pushed Google’s smartwatch operating system in a whole new direction.

The Pixel Watch is slated for a 2022 debut, according to an Insider report citing internal documents and multiple sources familiar with Google’s smartwatch project development. The highly-anticipated wearable — which internally goes by the codename “Rohan” — will reportedly boot the latest version of Wear OS, replicating the trend of Pixel smartphones arriving with the latest Android build with a ton of tricks and tweaks in tow. “Unlike the Apple Watch, Google’s smartwatch is round and has no physical bezel,” the report adds. Leak-based renders courtesy of Ian Zelbo pointed to a similar design. Google is reportedly testing the Pixel Watch among its employees, expanding the test circle to even members that are outside its smartwatch development team.

Google Finally Taking A Smartwatch Swing

Work on the Pixel Watch project reportedly accelerated in 2021 and the most recent internal feedback session is said to have happened only last month. The device reportedly comes equipped with a heart-rate monitor and offers the usual set of fitness-centric capabilities including step counting. However, there is no information on whether advanced features, such as blood oxygen saturation measurement and ECG analysis, will also be part of the package, as is the case with Samsung and Apple’s latest smartwatches. Speaking of which, the two companies are reportedly exploring even more advanced medical tricks including temperature measurement, blood glucose level monitoring, and even sleep apnea detection.

A key aspect worth noting here is that, just like the Apple Watch, the Pixel Watch will also be using proprietary straps. However, there is no word on whether Google will be offering the smartwatch in multiple sizes or utilizing a one-size-fits-all policy. “Insufficient sizing excludes some users from wearable wristables entirely,” says one of the documents cited in the report. With a 2022 debut on the cards, there is the chance of a Spring launch, assuming Google’s testing proves successful and no further refinements are needed.
