Googles Pixel 6 Pro Was Tested By Camera Experts & Hits US Top 3

A recent series of tests placed the Pixel 6 Pro at third in the rankings for smartphone cameras available within the United States, which is a dramatic leap from the previous generation but not quite chart-topping. Of course, it was already clear that the Pixel 6 Pro’s cameras are vastly improved over those Google has used in the past several generations, but it can be hard to quantify just how much better it is at photos and videos until results arrive from experts in the field.

The Pixel 6 Pro is the first Google phone to sport three rear cameras, an ultra-wide, wide, and telephoto. Each is improved over earlier versions. The Pixel 5 was the first model to come with an ultra-wide camera, replacing the telephoto of the Pixel 4. The Pixel 3 through 5 relied upon the same 12.2-megapixel image sensor used in the Pixel 2, which was released in 2017. This managed to produce good quality photos through only software updates, standing toe to toe with some competitors that updated their camera hardware every year. However, the Pixel began to slip a little in 2019 and fell behind in camera tests in 2020, requiring an update from Google in order to stay relevant to photography enthusiasts.

With the October release of the Pixel 6 Pro, Google has re-established itself as a force to be reckoned with in smartphone photography. Rocketing up from the 14th-place showing off the Pixel 5 to number three in the charts, Google has been acknowledged as one of the best smartphone camera makers in the U.S. market, according to the results posted by camera experts, DxOMark. Putting the Pixel 6 Pro through a rigorous series of tests to see how well it compares to the best smartphone cameras available, including nine for the primary camera, one each for ultra-wide and telephoto, and seven video quality tests, which is a good approximation of real-world use. As a result, the Pixel 6 Pro’s cameras overall beat those of every smartphone made by Samsung, OnePlus, Asus and Motorola. This is a remarkable improvement.

Pixel 6 Pro’s DxOMark Results

DxOMark found that the Pixel 6 Pro excelled at exposure, color accuracy and maintained impressive amounts of detail in photographs in both outdoor and indoor lighting. It’s a bit surprising the night-time photos showed the most significant weakness, something that Google took the lead with several years ago. DxOMark gave the Pixel 6 Pro a score of 67, which still beat Samsung’s Galaxy S21 Ultra’s 56. Apple’s iPhone 13 Pro Max, which currently sits at the overall number one position, scored 72 on the night photo test, with the high mark of 82 being earned by Huawei’s Mate 40 Pro-Plus. The bokeh test was also a bit disappointing for the Pixel 6 Pro, achieving a score of 65, which trails both Samsung’s and Apple’s best, which came in at 70 and 75 respectively.

Google has more range than ever with the Pixel 6 Pro’s ultra-wide, wide, and four times telephoto zoom. Yet, it wasn’t enough to win against the incredible 10-times optical zoom of Samsung’s Galaxy S21 Ultra and falls behind the combined strength of Apple’s nearly equivalent three times zoom and wider ultra-wide. In video tests, the Pixel 6 Pro scored 115, flying past Samsung’s best of 102 and the previous generation Pixel 5 at 107. Thus, it closed the gap, gaining on Apple, but couldn’t beat the iPhone 13 Pro Max’s 118, which is currently the leader in this measurement.

Overall, Google’s Pixel 6 Pro came within 2 points of Apple’s best smartphone camera, reaching 135 to the iPhone 13 Pro Max’s 137. The combined ranking is so close among the top three smartphone cameras that picking between them will depend on how the phone will be used. Google’s Pixel 6 Pro was expected to have great cameras, but placing in the top three in the U.S. after dropping out of DxOMark’s top ten is a monumental achievement.
