Serena and Blair were the indisputable protagonists of Gossip Girl. Their complicated and volatile dynamic was the source of many of the show’s most recurring storylines. Over time, audiences have realized just how messed up their friendship was. While there was clear and considerable love between the two, they were also deeply jealous of each other, envying what the other had.

It was always clear how different they were and throughout the seasons, fans did question why they even stayed friends at all. However, the show would then remind fans exactly what kind of bond these two girls had and all would be well. Still, it’s very easy to see why their friendship is, to this day, the subject of debate.

Remember how Blair once told a room full of entire Yale alumni that Serena killed a guy? And how she also told the representatives from all the main Ivy League Schools that Serena was a drug addict who had just come out of the Ostroff Center? And how Serena gave Blair’s future mother in law, Sophie, a book full of Gossip Girl blasts about Blair?

Basically, there could be no trust between these two, because everything they said to each other in confidence could be used against each other in any future argument.

It’s no secret that Serena and Blair had very troubled youths. Serena battled against addiction, both alcohol and drugs, from a very young age. At the same time, Blair struggled with an eating disorder that always made her feel ashamed.

Yet, the two helped each other in the best way they could. They may have been immature teens but the support they gave one another made all the difference, even if it didn’t solve their problems entirely. The shared history they have together is definitely a powerful reason for their continued friendship.

It’s no secret that Blair and Chuck were a terrible couple. They enjoyed tormenting each other and were both too selfish to truly care about the other’s well-being. He traded her for a hotel and constantly put her in danger, and she constantly reverted to her high school schemes to get what she wanted.

Dan and Serena were no better either. They were just as toxic – she was too immature and he, too self-centered, to have any kind of meaningful relationship. The fact that both Blair and Serena actually encouraged each other to carry on with those problematic behaviors speaks volumes about their friendship.

7 Sweetest: When They Didn’t Let Anyone Come Between Them

In season 4, Juliet arrives at the scene and is revealed to have a vendetta against Serena. Her initial plan is to turn everyone against the It-Girl, both friends and family. However, her scheme doesn’t work, as she is unable to pit Blair and Serena against each other.

The episode “The Undergraduates” features a fake fight between Serena and Blair, in which they indulge in their trademark combo of love and hate. However, it turns out to be a ruse to trick Juliet. While their friendship is safe (at least for the episode), the entire fight makes it clear that both the characters (and the writers of the show) knew exactly what was wrong with their relationship.

6 Toxic: Every Time They Attacked Each Other In Public

The number of times these two had harsh words for each other was pretty much beyond counting. Blair constantly degrades Serena and calls her every name in the book. And while Serena is nowhere near as gifted as Blair when it comes to spoken takedowns, she too calls out Blair on her insecurity and self-esteem issues. Once, Serena actually pushes Blair into a cake after one of the latter’s many insults. Another time, Blair pushes Serena into a fountain while in Paris.

Because they knew each other so well, they also had the exact words to inflict the most pain, once again confirming they were never truly safe around each other.

5 Sweetest: Every Time They Stood Up For Each Other In Public

When these two were on good terms, they ardently defended the other against everyone. They were both seen in very basic terms by most people in their life, so it came up to them to reveal the complexities they hid behind that only they knew.

Blair once calls out Lily for not understanding her own daughter and always thinking the worst of her. Similarly, Serena’s always telling everyone how Blair is more than her schemes, and how she’s a genuine friend.

4 Toxic: When They Jeopardized Each Other’s Futures

Serena and Blair’s immaturity led them to do some truly horrible things to each other. Because they were so wealthy, they probably didn’t care about holding on to any of the many jobs they had. Still, Blair prioritized her own schemes over everyone else, and that sometimes meant putting Serena’s job at risk.

For her part, and during her brief stint as Gossip Girl, Serena sends blasts containing pages from Blair’s diary. This involved pages where the younger Waldorf spoke about everything from her feelings towards her mom, to her confusion about her lingering love for Chuck. Talk about wanting to destroy someone’s future…

3 Sweetest: When They Prioritized Each Other’s Well-Being

Serena had no trouble shining on her own and Blair often found herself looking in from the sidelines (at least in the beginning). So it was always nice when the two got to share the spotlight, like when Serena abandons the opportunity to be the face of Eleanor Waldorf Designs to go have a fun day out with Blair.

Blair, too, rushed to Serena’s aid time and again, from helping her deal with Georgina Sparks at the end of season 1 to teaming up with Dan to bring down Juliet. Sure, Blair loved a good game, but it was done out of real love and concern for Serena.

2 Toxic: When They Used The Men In Their Life To Hurt Each Other

Serena slept with not one, but two of Blair’s boyfriends. She was with Nate during a drunken moment which she really regretted, but her affair with Dan was done out of pure desire to hurt Blair.

For her part, Blair dated Dan despite knowing how much he meant to Serena. Had Blair been truly in love with Dan, maybe it could be excused. But the truth is, she never stopped loving Chuck and was simply with Dan to try and get over her bow-tie-wearing ex. The fact she had so little respect for Serena’s feelings is telling.

1 Sweetest: When They Were Each Other’s Families

Through thick and thin, Blair and Serena stayed by each other’s side. Sure, their relationship was quite damaged and full of mood swings and inconsistencies, but they had genuine love for each other. They knew they could depend on the other if times got particularly dark.

And while that certainty allowed them to mistreat each other, because they knew that no matter how bad things got, they’d still be there, it also meant they had a bond deeper than any other in the show. They truly were more than friends, they were actual sisters, and that’s a bind that can never be broken.
