The pairing of Gossip Girl’s Chuck and Blair felt inevitable, and, while they’re seemingly perfect together, they have a few issues.

Chuck and Blair were the draw for many fans of Gossip Girl throughout its six seasons. Their on-and-off, will-they-won’t-they dynamic kept people guessing, but it was always clear that they’d be together in the end.

Despite the inevitability of their relationship, some weren’t on board with their relationship and thought they’d be better off with other people. Here are five arguments for why they were right for each other, and five more for why they weren’t.

10 Are: Chuck Brings Out A Freer Side Of Blair

When Blair breaks up with Nate, she goes to Chuck to take her mind off of things. Chuck dares her to dance onstage at his burlesque club, and Blair surprises them both by doing it. They both enjoy her newfound freedom, and she ends up losing her virginity to him that night.

9 Aren’t: Chuck Sold Blair For His Hotel

When his uncle Jack threatens to take Chuck’s hotel away from him, he offers Chuck a chance to keep it if he can sleep with Blair. Chuck agrees to the deal and basically pimps out his girlfriend. Blair doesn’t end up having to go through with it, but their relationship isn’t able to recover once she knows that Chuck values a hotel over her.

8 Are: Blair Is The Only Woman Chuck’s Ever Loved

When Blair returns from Europe in the show’s second season, Chuck is unable to tell her how he feels. Much of the season’s conflict is focused on the immaturity of the two.

Blair finally gives up on Chuck ever telling her what she wants to hear. Chuck surprises her by coming back and telling her he loves her, and the two begin a relationship.

7 Aren’t: They’ve Hurt Each Other A Lot

Blair left Chuck for Nate, Louis, and Dan. Chuck compared Blair to a sweaty racehorse, abandoned her at an airport, sold her for a hotel, and slept with Jenny Humphrey—okay, so maybe I can see why he wouldn’t always be her first choice.

The two always find reasons not to be together: Chuck’s reputation, Chuck’s emotional immaturity, Blair’s engagement, and Chuck’s dad coming back to life, though we suppose some of these are pretty valid. At a certain point, one wonders whether it might be easier for them to just call it quits for good.

6 Are: They Share The Same Twisted Sensibilities

Chuck and Blair’s friendship bloomed over a mutual love for scheming and drama, and their romantic relationship began at a burlesque club after Blair had just broken up with Chuck’s best friend. They spent a year refusing to admit that they loved each other and spent the first few months of their relationship staging scenarios wherein Blair could catch Chuck with other women so she could humiliate them. They’ve used their powers of manipulation for and against each other, but, in that regard, they’re one another’s only true equals.

5 Aren’t: They’re Both Really Selfish

In many ways, Chuck and Blair’s negative qualities intensify when they’re together. They manipulate others to get what they want and almost always put themselves first. There’s some validity to the argument made by fans that perhaps they would have been better suited to people who could bring out their better traits.

4 Are: They Share A Passionate Love

Chuck and Blair’s chemistry is really something, which is why audiences continued to root for them through all the obstacles their relationship faced. Blair is the only woman Chuck’s even been able to express love to, and Blair can’t move on with Louis or Dan in season five because their passion doesn’t compare to what she had with Chuck. Sometimes, love defies logic, and Gossip Girl always defies logic, anyway.

3 Aren’t: Chuck Is Emotionally Unavailable

Though Chuck grows throughout the course of the show, his lack of emotional maturity can be trying to those who try to be close to him. He’s often rude, manipulative, and emotionally distant. Even after telling Blair that he loves her, their relationship often suffers from Chuck’s poor communication skills.

2 Are: They’re Equals

Blair refuses to let her success rely on her status as Chuck Bass’ girlfriend and is angry instead of grateful when he buys her out of her marriage. Likewise, Chuck agrees that they each need to be successful on their own before they can rely too much on each other.

It’s one of the healthier aspects of their relationship and keeps one or the other from having too much power. They’re a match in terms of their personal strengths, as well.

1 Aren’t: They Manipulate Each Other

People generally agree that trust is sort of essential for a relationship to function, but how Chuck and Blair could ever trust each other is a mystery, as they often find each other at the center of their schemes. The dissolution of their relationships outside of one another can almost always be traced to each other; Chuck sent in the tip to Gossip Girl that made Nate break up with Blair, Blair manipulated Chuck into breaking up with Eva, and Chuck tried multiple times to manipulate Blair into breaking up with Dan.

They’re able to justify their actions, no matter how wrong they are, and neither one should really be trusted. But, on Gossip Girl, that’s nothing out of the ordinary.
