Gossip Girl Renewed For Season 2 At HBO Max Season 1 Returns In November

Gossip Girl has been renewed for season 2 at HBO Max. Taking place roughly a decade after the conclusion of the original Gossip Girl series, which itself was based on Cecily von Ziegesar’s books, the reboot returns to the Upper East Side to focus on a new generation of New York private school teens who become the focus of the mysterious titular character. The show also sheds light on how social media has changed and evolved in the intervening years.

The creative team who worked on the original returned for the reboot. Joshua Safran, an executive producer on the first Gossip Girl, serves as showrunner on the new version. He also executive produces, alongside the original’s co-creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage. But despite the similarities behind the camera, and although it takes place in the same universe as the original, with Kristen Bell coming back as the narrator, HBO Max’s Gossip Girl boasts a far more diverse group of actors: Jordan Alexander, Whitney Peak, Evan Mock, Zión Moreno, and Savannah Lee Smith are just some of the names that make up the teen drama’s ensemble. They’ve been a hit with audiences, along with their co-stars, and now it’s confirmed that the show will be coming back for another installment.

HBO Max has announced that it has renewed Gossip Girl for season 2. As previously announced, the remaining episodes of the reboot’s first season will premiere in November. The streamer touted the fact that Gossip Girl drew record viewership over its first weekend. And, in addition, HBO Max noted the series garnered 15 billion total social impressions at launch, in addition to around 5.2 billion impressions specifically on TikTok.

Critically, the response to Gossip Girl has been more muted. While many reviewers appreciated the efforts to diversify the characters, a frequent complaint was that the storylines were often bogged down by the need to gesture towards social progress. Unlike the original, where the likes of Serena and Blair often reveled in behaving badly, the reboot has so far touched on serious topics like police brutality and frictions within the LGBTQ+ community merely as a subplot before moving on to the relationship drama and familial angst more commonly seen in the teen drama genre.

But, on a positive note, the show now has another season to potentially improve on its shortcomings and build on its existing audience. The reboot also contains a clear connection to its past, which could potentially open the door for more Gossip Girl cameos in the future. But, at least for the time being, when Gossip Girl resumes in November, fans can be assured that they’ll have more than six episodes to spend with their favorite characters.
