Gravity Falls 5 Jokes That Are Destined To Be Timeless (& 5 That Wont Age Well)

Over the last decade, some cartoons have blurred the boundaries between cartoons for children and adults, and Gravity Falls is one of them. It is also a remarkable accomplishment in modern animated storytelling and unique in many ways. The writing is smart, with few to no plot inconsistencies; the voice acting, sound design, and animation itself are all superb. But most importantly, even though the main characters are both twelve, the show never feels dumbed-down.

It is very much the opposite, actually: most episodes are a nonstop succession of killer jokes, many of them full of adult double meaning that children won’t get. But while the writing team should be proud of the show, there are a couple of jokes that might get old a little too early, for various reasons.

10 Won’t Age Well – Wendy’s Lack Of Ghosting Expertise

Wendy Corduroy, the teen who works at the Mystery Shack tourist trap, is easily one of the coolest characters in the show. She has a grungy look, witty temperament, and hangs out with a group of friends straight out of an 80s high school movie. It is surprising, then, to watch her struggle when ignoring calls by a “boyfriend” of hers after giving Mabel advice about boys. Although not particularly nice, it is now just much easier to simply mute any contact and move on smoothly.

9 Timeless – “I’ve Got A Mullet, Stanford!”

When Grunkle Stan reveals his past in the episode “A Tale of Two Stans,” the story of his mysterious twin brother is told. When they meet after years without seeing each other, his brother, Ford, mentions how hard he has had it in life.

Stan immediately starts listing all the hardships he has gone through to show he’s had it worse: being arrested in three countries, having to chew his way out of the trunk of a car, or having a mullet.

8 Won’t Age Well – The Mystery Bag

There is another, more problematic side of Grunkle Stan: not unlike SpongeBob’s Mr. Krabs, he is crazy about money. Although later on in the series his real reasons for being so money-obsessed are revealed, his methods to make money are not quite ethical. One of his common tricks is to pass a “mystery bag” around for his customers: all the money put in it magically disappears. In an increasingly cashless world, it would be easier to have a Mystery Shack app with a “mystery donation” feature.

7 Timeless – Fight Fighters

Robin, Wendy’s boyfriend, is a total bully. When he figures out that Dipper has a crush on her, he schedules a fight against his much smaller, younger opponent. Desperate about getting beaten up, Dipper discovers a special feature of a fighting arcade game (an obvious parody of Street Fighters) and materializes one of the game’s characters to protect him.

Although the game references are pretty outdated already, they smartly homage classics that will remain recognizable for a long time still.

6 Won’t Age Well – References To Celebrities

Although it is not really as dependent on current events as, say, South Park, Gravity Falls also has its shares of celebrity parodies and cameos. While some of them are more lasting references – like Ford’s posters of Nikola Tesla and Carl Sagan on his wall –, others are probably going to grow increasingly unnoticed by future audiences, like a parody to Ashton Kutcher’s earlier-2000s Punk’d show.

5 Timeless – Soos’ Virtual Girlfriend

Jesus “Soos” Alzamirano Ramírez is first displayed as the dim-witted, but kind handyman of the Mystery Shack. As the show progresses, he stands out as the most loyal ally of the Pines family. On one occasion, his abuelita tells him that it’s time for him to get a date, only for him to fail miserably.

When he resorts to playing a dating simulation game, he falls in love with his virtual girlfriend. In video calling times where artificial intelligence is already pretty sophisticated, there will probably be still many lovers identifying with Soos.

4 Won’t Age Well – Wendy Eating A Bat After Weirdmageddon

The whole Weirdmageddon plot arc is hilarious, full of suspense and action, and serves as the perfect way to end the show. But while the universe seemed to be almost ripping apart and Gravity Falls was taken by a tsunami of weirdness, the poor inhabitants of the city had to survive with what they had. Dipper is hiding with Wendy, and she seems to be handling the post-apocalyptic situation well. When she kills a bat, the joke is that she doesn’t waste its meat. In post-covid 19 times, it is hard to watch the scene and not associate it with bad consequences.

3 Timeless – “We Don’t Serve Miners”

A big part of the show’s success formula is its balance of silly, adult, and nonsense jokes, sometimes all of them at the same time. In one of their first adventures, the Mystery Twins try to investigate who decapitated a wax sculpture of Grunkle Stan made by Mabel.

The investigation leads them to a cliché biker bar, full of drunken tattooed bad guys fighting. Although the bouncer of the place has no problem with Mabel and Dipper’s obviously fake IDs, he doesn’t let any “miner” go in. It is a silly joke, yes, but the way it is delivered is too perfectly-timed to not be hilarious.

2 Won’t Age Well – Girly Jokes

As much as the show portrays its female characters in a very positive, non-stereotypical manner, every now and then there is a trash talk joke that might go too far. Characters have more than once called Dipper “girly” to demean him, such as Rumble McSkirmish in Fight Fighters or the elderly ghost couple who haunts a grocery store. Sure, every time it happens it is in a context where the trash talker is a bully. But in a world where “fight like a girl” is more and more seen as a compliment, it sounds a little off.

1 Timeless – Mabel’s Sweetness

Mabel Pines’ undying good humor and goofiness keeps the twins’ adventures interesting and funny. An example of how being sweet all the time and never giving up hope does pay off, she also often demonstrates her intelligence and positive willpower. In Golf War, for example, she has a golf duel with her rival, Pacifica Northwest, and she summons a bunch of strange little creatures who live on the golf course to help her win. When things almost go really bad, she realizes her mistake and apologizes using a weapon of excessive cuteness: a cat sticker that says “I a-PAW-logize”. It worked: from then on, the girls got along fine – all they needed was a little kindness.
