MingNa Wen Teases Boba Fett & Fennec Shands Dynamic In New Show

The Book of Boba Fett star Ming-Na Wen previews the new dynamic that lies ahead for Fennec Shand and the titular bounty hunter. Thanks to the success of The Mandalorian, Lucasfilm has fast-tracked a number of Star Wars shows for Disney+, and the first to arrive is The Book of Boba Fett. Premiering later this month, the series will pick up with longtime fan favorite Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison) as he returns to Tatooine to stake his claim in what was once Jabba the Hutt’s criminal empire. As a post-credits stinger from The Mandalorian season 2 revealed, he’ll be joined by new companion Fennec Shand.

Wen’s sharpshooter first debuted in The Mandalorian season 1 and was seemingly killed off in her very first episode. However, season 2 revealed Boba had saved her, thus allowing her to play a pivotal role in the final episodes. After putting in a voice appearance in the animated series Star Wars: The Bad Batch, Wen returns to live-action with The Book of Boba Fett, where she will act as a secondary lead opposite Morrison. In addition to furthering both of their characters, it sounds like the series will also deepen the unique bond between them.

Wen teased what fans can expect from the dynamic between Fennec and Boba in the Winter 2021 issue of Disney’s D23 magazine (via The Direct). Though they make an unlikely pair, Wen said their partnership is largely rooted in their similar experiences and the code they live by. It also sounds like they’re going to exist in a bit of a morally grey area, which is to be expected when one takes over Jabba the Hutt’s base of operations. Wen said:

“Well, there’s a partnership between the two of them [Fennec and Boba Fett], for sure. They’re bonded by the fact that they both lived through a near-death experience. And there is a sense of code that they both abide by.

“So it’s going to be really interesting to see how their dynamics grow in The Book of Boba Fett. I think that’s all I can say. The rest is, you have to watch. Not that they’re the bad guys. They’re not that good either.”

Wen added she’s enjoyed playing an anti-hero. She’s best known for more heroic roles like Mulan and Melinda May on Agents of SHIELD, so fans of her work are being treated to something new with The Book of Boba Fett. On The Mandalorian, Fennec wasn’t exactly a shining hero, but her alliance with Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) put her on the side of good, especially in season 2. Now that she’s largely playing off Boba, all bets are off when it comes to what she is capable of.

Boba Fett and Fennec Shand make an interesting duo, and it’ll be exciting to see what they do now that they’re on their own. As Wen said, they have similar beliefs and past experiences that can form the foundation for their bond. Depending on what goes on in The Book of Boba Fett, that bond can either grow stronger or weaker, but one has to hope it’ll be the former. Additionally, the promise of a Star Wars project that’s centered on anti-heroes is an intriguing prospect, so fans have a lot to be excited about with this one. Stay tuned for more teases in the weeks to come.
