PlayStation 5 How To Change Faceplates

Over a year after the PlayStation 5 initially launched, Sony has revealed that more proprietary faceplates for the console are on the horizon. The design of the PS5 itself was a bit divisive, but many originally criticized Sony’s choice of white being the dominant color on the hardware and peripherals. The faceplates are already easily removable, a necessary function to allow users a peek inside for things like the PS5’s SSD storage expansion or routine cleaning.

Sony has opted for an interstellar theme with its new colors. Eventually, Midnight Black, Cosmic Red, Galactic Purple, Nova Pink, and Starlight Blue colors will be available for not only the PS5 faceplates, but also for new DualSense controllers. The DualSense can already be purchased in Midnight Black and Cosmic Red, and these will likewise be the first two colors available for the swappable faceplates, going on sale in January 2022. The console faceplates will carry a price tag of $55, while all the new DualSense colors will follow the Cosmic Red controller’s lead of $75 (a step up from the baseline $70 of the original white and Midnight Black).

Luckily for those eager to customize their console a bit with the newly revealed PS5 faceplates, it’s a rather simple task. No tools are required, and there is only a modicum of preparation. PS5 owners will first want to make sure their console is completely powered off in order to avoid potentially corrupting data on the SSD. All cords – power, HDMI, and ethernet if applicable – should then be unplugged from the back of the console. Users will then want a relatively flat surface to work on, and maybe something soft like a towel or blanket if scratching the console’s face is a worry.

How To Replace The PlayStation 5’s Faceplates

Those who want to remove the plates should start with the one that has the traditional PlayStation logo design in the corner. Laying the PS5 on its side, the logo should be oriented to the top right corner. Pulling up on the corner with the logo, while gently pushing on the opposite corner (bottom left) should result in a small popping noise as the pins that hold the faceplate in place come loose. For the second one, flipping the console horizontally on its Y-axis will now put the corner that needs to be pulled in the top left (opposite the disc drive if not working with a Digital Edition). The same method of pulling up on that corner, while pushing from the other side should be used.

The new faceplates should now slide on rather simply. The pins that hold it in place stick out on the underside of each plate, and their corresponding holes can be found on the console itself. They just have to be lined up, and popped into place, with a motion opposite of what was done to remove the faceplates in the first place. Third party accessories are already available, including faceplates and newer gadgets like SCUF’s Reflex line of high-performance PlayStation controllers, but now PlayStation 5 owners will soon have a wide range of customizability for their console and controllers with Sony’s first-party peripherals.
