Great RPGs With Romance Options Like Mass Effect

Although many RPGs contain companions to assist the player on their journey throughout the game, not many include such a large focus on romantic options as the Mass Effect series does. The relationships of the Mass Effect franchise are part of what sets it apart in the eyes of so many fans, and many are interested in finding similar RPGs to dip into after playing through the Mass Effect titles. Here are a few notable games that feature romance choices.

It seems that romance mechanics within video games are becoming more common than they were in previous years. Saints Row IV, the most recent release in the action-adventure series Saints Row that came out in 2013, was the first in the series to contain romance choices. Other games that aren’t strictly RPGs, such as the farming sim Stardew Valley, also included a similar mechanic that allowed players to enter relationships with townsfolk.

The release of Mass Effect Legendary Edition this year helped draw new players into the franchise and helped bring renewed attention to BioWare, which was previously stumbling after the highly criticized releases of Anthem and Mass Effect: Andromeda. Last year they revealed a trailer for Mass Effect 4, which will seemingly continue the original trilogy, much to the excitement of fans. Given that BioWare is also still developing Dragon Age 4, however, it seems that Mass Effect 4 is still a long ways off. Fortunately, there are quite a few similar RPGs that players can look into in the interim.

RPGs With Romance Options – Dragon Age

Great RPGs With Romance Options Like Mass Effect

Dragon Age is widely considered to be BioWare’s other most successful RPG series aside from Mass Effect, and it features similar mechanics in many regards. Although the series takes place across a fantasy setting rather than placing itself in the sci-fi genre, it includes various companions across each game that players have the option to romance. One key difference that sets it apart from Mass Effect, however, is the fact that Dragon Age’s protagonist changes across every game – rather than continuing previous romances, players start over with a new character each time.

Another BioWare title, this one set within the Star Wars universe, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR) features romance mechanics that are reminiscent of those that Mass Effect would become so well-known for later on. The game has a sequel – which also contains romance options – that was developed by Obsidian Entertainment. Both KOTOR games allow for complete player customization, but, unlike Mass Effect, the protagonist is not fully voiced.

RPGs With Romance Options – Fallout 4

Technically speaking, romance mechanics aren’t anything new for Bethesda games, but Fallout 4 is arguably the game that fleshed them out the fullest. Like Mass Effect, the game features a customizable and fully-voiced protagonist – albeit one with less-than-perfect dialogue compared to Mass Effect, in the eyes of many fans – that can be played as either male or female. There are several romance options to choose from, though progressing with the relationship relies on gaining affinity with the desired companion first.

RPGs With Romance Options – Divinity Original Sin 2

Divinity: Original Sin 2, the sequel to 2014’s Divinity: Original Sin, features a wide variety of unique romance options – including, among other things, an undead skeleton. When coupled with the game’s complexity in terms of combat and other interactive features, Divinity 2 is a genuinely original fantasy RPG with plenty of options for player freedom and character customization. It’s worth looking into for players who enjoyed exploring the complicated stories of the companions in the Mass Effect trilogy.
