Grey’s Anatomy has an empowering set of characters that have inspired many individuals to pursue their goals and dreams. With the show’s storylines mainly focusing on the male-dominated field, fans have watched Meredith Grey transform from an inexperienced intern to a successful surgeon, as she refuses to let anyone or anything get in the way of her dreams.

However, that’s not to say there haven’t been a few people who have tried to knock the confidence of this empowering role model. In fact, many of the other women on the show have faced discrimination because of their success. Yet, no matter how hard the critics tried, Meredith and her fellow doctors supported each other and proved that nothing could keep them down.

10 Izzie Was Proud Of Her Past As A Model

In season 1, fans learned that Izzie modeled lingerie for Bethany Whisper. When Alex and their other colleagues decided to mock her by plastering her images all over the hospital and calling her Dr. Model, Izzie decided to stand her ground and confront them over it in their locker room.

Izzie experienced a lot of sadness in her life and while it wasn’t fun for her to see people putting up her lingerie photos at the hospital, she knew that there was nothing to be ashamed of. Viewers loved this scene as she put Alex in his place once she told him that modeling had made her debt-free. It helped fans understand that nothing could take Izzie down.

9 Meredith Told Derek Not To Call Her Names

In the season 2 episode ‘Damage Case,’ fans were shocked when Derek degraded Meredith for sleeping with George and Finn. Furiously, she responded, “You don’t get to call me a wh*re. When I met you, I thought I had found the person that I was going to spend the rest of my life with. I was done.”

Meredith and Derek had some relationship problems, and fans saw Derek as a hypocrite as he had cheated on his wife with Meredith and yet here he was, insulting her for sleeping with other people. He had no right to talk about her behavior. This was a big moment for Meredith and fans were super proud of Meredith for standing up for herself and letting Derek know that she wasn’t going to wait around for him to choose her or stop dating completely. He needed to know that she was strong and could live without him.

8 Cristina Told Meredith That She’s The Sun, Not Derek

When Meredith was struggling with Derek’s career changes and how much it was impacting their family life, Cristina stunned everyone with her words of wisdom. When she said, “Don’t let what he wants eclipse what you need. He’s very dreamy, but he’s not the sun, you are,” it was totally unforgettable.

Meredith had strong friendships with both Alex and Cristina, but for many Grey’s Anatomy viewers, Cristina’s speech made her the ultimate BFF for Meredith. This was a shining example of how feminist the show can be sometimes, as Cristina couldn’t imagine her friend putting her career dreams second because of her marriage.

7 Meredith Told Derek It Was Her Turn To Shine

Meredith and Derek had a lot on their plates once they started a family, and when Derek got an offer to work for the President, this understandably created some problems. They argued about who would devote more time to their kids and who would focus on their career more. Meredith did tell Derek that it was her turn to shine and they talked about how she could put more time into her work.

This was both an important moment in their love story and also a time when Meredith was being a feminist. She didn’t want to take a backseat and she knew that she was owed the time and space to pursue her dreams.

6 Cristina Stuck To Her Desire Not To Become A Parent

Many Grey’s Anatomy viewers appreciate Cristina’s storyline about deciding not to have kids as there are not many characters on TV who were childfree. Although this made her relationship with Owen very difficult, as he always saw himself with a family, Cristina had always been honest about what she saw for her future.

Cristina’s desire to be childfree made her a great role model because she knew that her choices were important and that she deserved to have the life that she wanted.

5 Richard Refused To Make Callie An Attending

In the season 6 premiere, Richard refused to make Callie an attending because “there wasn’t enough money in the budget.” Since she had been running the Ortho service practically on her own, she quit and began working at Mercy West Hospital (but not without letting Richard have a piece of her mind).

In a beautiful and empowering moment, Callie said, “I’m a superstar with a scalpel” and told him that anyone would be lucky to have her as a surgeon. She told him that he would be sorry that he didn’t promote her as she would go on to win some of the most prestigious awards. Callie impressed fans with her speech, and this was proof that while it’s not always possible to change the situation, it’s always possible for someone to stand strong. Callie believed in herself and she knew she would be a huge success because of it.

4 Bailey Divorced Tucker For Not Supporting Her

Bailey and Tucker’s marriage was never smooth, and things fell apart for good when she could accept a pediatric surgery fellowship. He didn’t like that and said that she couldn’t be a wife and mother while also taking the fellowship.

With this storyline, Bailey proved to be a feminist character, as she continued on her path of general surgery and told Tucker that she was leaving him. She knew that he was wrong to try to squash her dreams and to act like she can’t ever make any career changes or explore a new interest. She stood up for herself, wanting equality in the marriage, which she seems to have happily found with Ben.

3 Cristina Told Owen To Compliment Her Brain

In season 7, Cristina told Owen, “Oh, screw beautiful. I’m brilliant. If you want to appease me, compliment my brain.” While he quickly replied, “Okay,” this became a memorable moment on the show and also a perfect example of Cristina’s feminist nature.

She stood up for herself and explained to Owen that he couldn’t flatter her by telling her that she was attractive. It was a big deal that Cristina made this statement, as she made it clear that there was more to her than just her looks, with her intelligence being an important part of her identity. In a perfect world, Cristina wouldn’t even have to say anything at all, but complimenting someone’s physical appearance rather than personality traits or accomplishments has sadly become the norm.

2 Jo Advocated For A Fellowship For Herself

While Jo has many sad scenes, she has also shown herself to be a tough, strong, and independent person, especially in the season 15 episode ‘Broken Together.’ She advocated a fellowship for herself by telling Meredith that she had a great research concept. When Bailey said there were no funds, Jo wouldn’t take no for an answer and said she was the “future of medicine.”

When Bailey eventually agreed, Jo proved that she went after her goals and made it happen, and fans cheered that she was able to create such an exciting new path for herself. Grey’s Anatomy often focuses on Jo’s difficult past or tough relationship with Alex, so it was great to see her standing up for what she believed in.

1 Bailey Knew She Would Make An Excellent Chief

After Owen was no longer Chief of Surgery, Bailey seemed to be the best candidate, and she learned that she would be competing with Tracy. This was also a feminist moment as Bailey knew that she was the perfect person for the job and that no one else could do the same work as her.

It was impressive that Bailey advocated for herself, as many might be tempted to say that of course others would also be qualified. She was proud of her skills and talent and years of experience and wasn’t going to back down. It was also a great moment as this marked the day that Bailey became the first female Chief of Surgery for Grey Sloan Memorial.
