Issa Raes Sweet Life Los Angeles Renewed For Second Season On HBO Max

Creator and actress Issa Rae’s reality TV show Sweet Life: Los Angeles has been renewed for a second season on HBO Max, confirming that she has secured a second hit show on the platform. Sweet Life: Los Angeles premiered in August 2021 with 10 episodes centered around young Black people in their mid-twenties navigating their careers and relationships in Los Angeles. It stars Jordan Bentley, P’Jae Compton, Robert Lee, Amanda Scott, Cheryl Des Vignes, Jerrold Smith II, Rebecca “Becky” Magett, Briana Jones, Tylynn Burns and Jaylenn Hart.

Sweet Life: Los Angeles is Rae’s second show with HBO Max. It comes after the success of her comedy show Insecure which deals with the awkward experiences of a modern Black woman. The Emmy-winning show premiered in 2016 and has had four seasons. Sweet Life: Los Angeles deals with many similar themes, but in a very different way. This season, fans watched cast members hit big life goals, such as purchasing your first home and moving in with significant others, as well as the more typical reality TV events such as extravagant parties and lavish vacations.

Now, Essence reported that the show was renewed for a second season with HBO Max. “The incredibly talented Issa Rae and her producing partners delivered an elevated, purposeful series which featured the fun, inspiring, and challenging moments that young adults face navigating relationships and careers,” said Jennifer O’Connell, an executive vice president at WarnerMedia is quoted saying. “Fans are really embracing this endearing, entertaining and ambitious group of friends. We can’t wait to see where they take us for season two as they continue to shine an important light on Black culture in South Los Angeles,” Rebecca Quinn, Senior Vice President at WarnerMedia added.

The announcement of a second season for Sweet Life: Los Angeles comes soon after news that Rae signed a deal worth tens of millions of dollars to create content with HBO Max over the next five years, Essence reported. Her next show with HBO Max, a comedy show called Rap Sh*t, is about two estranged high school friends from Miami who get back together and decide to create a rap group, according to Harper’s Bazaar. The show will also have ties to reality TV, as one of the stars will be Love and Hip Hip: Miami cast member KaMillion. KaMillion will play a makeup artist named Mia, who is a single mom that works three jobs to make ends meet.

There’s a lot to mull over now that Sweet Life: Los Angeles has ended. Between all the drama, the rocky relationships, and frank conversations about privilege and blackness, the show has a lot still to offer for season 2. The show, which has a The Hills-esque feel to it but deals with fresher, less-explored topics, could probably provide enough content for several more seasons. Perhaps it will even get some spinoffs.
