Green Arrow DC Celebrates 80th Anniversary With SuperSized Issue

As Green Arrow is celebrating his 80th anniversary this year, DC Comics has announced that a super-sized issue will be commemorating his legacy throughout comics. The one-shot will highlight the Emerald Archer’s many iterations, prior creative teams, and the various partners who have joined him on his mission.

Oliver Queen, aka Green Arrow, made his first appearance in More Fun Comics #73 in 1941, quickly joining the Seven Soldiers of Victory, and later becoming an original founding member of the Justice League of America. Since then, Green Arrow has had several iterations, with some lighter in tone than others. Earlier stories introduced the boxing glove arrow, the Arrowcar, and the Arrowcave among other memorable inventions. However, the iconic creative team of writer Dennis O’Neil and artist Neal Adams took the character to the next level when the archer hero’s Robin Hood inspiration meshed with social commentary in the late ’60s and throughout the ’70s, changing the way comics were written going forward.

In celebration of Green Arrow’s 80th anniversary in comics, DC is releasing a one-shot titled Green Arrow 80th Anniversary 100-Page Super Spectacular #1. Several major characters from throughout Oliver Queen’s superhero career will make an appearance, such as Connor Hawke, Arsenal, Red Arrow, Speedy, and of course, longtime love interest Black Canary. The Emerald Archer’s villains Count Vertigo and Onomatopoeia are also set to show up, among many others. The tribute will include stories from past writers and artists including Mike Grell, Jeff Lemire, Otto Schmidt, Phil Hester, Ben Percy, Tom Taylor, and Devin Grayson, along with fresh talent such as Stephanie Phillips, Ram V, Mariko Tamaki, Vita Ayala, Nicola Scott, Laura Braga, Chris Mitten, Brandon Thomas, and Max Fiumara. The one-shot’s official cover is illustrated by Dan Mora.

The super-sized issue will also include eight variant covers showcasing the eras of Green Arrow from decade to decade. Michael Cho will be illustrating a 1940’s variant cover, Daniel Warren Johnson will illustrate the ’50s variant, Neal Adams will fittingly illustrate the ’60s, Derrick Chew has the ’70s, Gary Frank has the ’80s, Howard Porter has the ’90s, Jen Bartel has the 2000’s, and the 2010’s will be illustrated by Simone Di Meo. DC’s clear focus on implementing each decade leading up to 2021 seems to promise crowd-pleasing stories that encompass Green Arrow’s complete history. In contrast, Mora’s main cover pays tribute to a version of the character more recognizable to the 2000’s era, set to gain new prominence as a returning member of the Justice League.

Green Arrow has long been an idiosyncratic DC hero, though a lessening focus on his strong political views has meant he’s faded into the comics background recently, even as the CW has used Queen as the centerpiece for their ‘Arrowverse’ family of DC adaptation shows. Despite this, the Emerald Archer’s history is just as rich as other key DC superheroes like Superman and Batman, with plenty of major contributions to the medium and a committed fanbase glad for every new appearance. Coming June 29 to stores and online retailers, Green Arrow 80th Anniversary 100-Page Super Spectacular is a celebration of the character’s legacy so far, but fans are hoping it’s also a sign that Oliver Queen is returning to the forefront of DC’s superhero scene, ready to ruffle some feathers (especially if they’re Hawkman’s.)
